“Oh, shit.” Faith leaned back and frowned. “Are you considering it?”
“No!” The phone rang again, and she sighed. “But it’s damn difficult. A drug that was approved for schizophrenia was marketed for unapproved uses. Those bastards promoted it as a treatment for elderly dementia patients and individuals with mental disabilities.” She threw up her hands. “How can I stay out of the fight?”
“I don’t know.” Faith took Tancy’s hand. “Whatever you decide, I support you.”
She squeezed her friend’s hand. “Thank you.”
“Are you going to tell Teague about the case?”
“Not yet. Why bring up something that might never happen?” She waved her hand. “Enough about me. How are you? What’s new with Scott and his PR dilemma.”
“I have something in the works and will be heading down to Miami tomorrow. Which is why I stopped by. Can you water my plants and bring in my mail?”
“Of course. Is it anything that you can tell me about?”
“The deal isn’t inked, but I will give you two words. Bake. Off.”
Tancy gasped. “No way. Are you trying to get him a spot on my favorite show?”
“I can neither confirm nor deny that there is an open spot on the celebrity charity season, but I will say that you may have to give him a few quick lessons.”
“Count me in.” She clapped her hands. “Maybe he’ll be paired with a charming baker that he won’t be able to resist.”
“I hope not. The man is a disaster when it comes to affairs of the heart, and I’d like to clean up one mess before he starts another.” Faith twisted her hair into a bun. “Oh my gosh. I almost forgot to tell you.”
“What?”
“I ran into that sexy mafia guy the other day.”
“So he’s Italian and not Russian.”
Faith nodded. “We had a moment.”
“What kind of moment?” she asked, leaning forward.
“It happened over a packet of sugar.”
“Did you have clothes on?”
“Of course,” Faith scoffed. “We were in the coffee shop.” She smoothed a pleat on her violet skirt. “His name is Alex Moretti.”
She rolled her hand. “I’m going to need more than a name.”
“The man is a poem and a heavy metal song mashed together. Brutal and elegant. Harsh and well-spoken. Our interaction lasted no more than five minutes, and I hate to admit I’ve thought of little else.” She threw up her hands. “I’m disgusted by my fascination.”
“I’m not. This is the first time in years that anyone has caught your interest.”
“And lucky me, he’s likely connected to a syndicate or criminal organization.”
“Did he say anything to make you believe that?”
“Not specifically. But I got a strong feeling that his family business isn’t completely legit.”
“How much does that bother you?”
“Not as much as it should.” Faith pushed herself away from the desk. “Which is why I’m going to bury myself in work and pray that I never run into him again.”
“Alright.” Tancy stood. “But if you change your mind, let me know. I’d be happy to put my super sleuth skills to work or, better yet, get Myra on it.”
