Before she could fully recover Adrian moved up her body and slid his thick, hard length inside her. Her fingernails sank into his back as she wrapped her legs around his waist. Adrian’s eyes widened as he groaned and sank even further inside her.

“Adrian!”

“Everleigh...Dios mío, Everleigh.”

Each stroke lifted her higher, brought them closer, and their gazes met, clashed, burning with need and some unspoken emotion that fanned the lust between them into a scorching heat so hot Everleigh was sure she’d burst into flames.

Harder, faster... Their breaths mingled and her heart pounded in her chest as she felt the muscles in his back shift with each powerful thrust. Every movement, every time their bodies joined, stoked not only her desire but the love that had been growing inside her since she’d met him.

Time paused—and then her nerves exploded with sensation. She cried out his name, over and over again, sobbing as the most exquisite pleasure rushed through her body, leaving her trembling and weak. Adrian followed a moment later, shuddering as he slid inside her one last time.

She didn’t know how long they lay together on the rug, arms and legs wrapped around each other. She only knew that, no matter where her future took her, she would remember this moment as long as she lived...remember the feel of his skin beneath her hand, the slowing pulse of his heartbeat, the scent of sex and cedar lingering on the air as the fire crackled behind them.

The moment she accepted that she was in love with Adrian Cabrera.

After he’d cleaned up, he came back and pulled the blanket over them. She curled against his body, savoring the heat of his skin and the warmth of his arms around her. The rain continued to drum a steady but soft beat on the roof.

“I like this rainstorm better than the last one we got caught in.”

His chuckle reverberated in his chest. “Me too.”

Her eyes drifted shut and she surrendered to the sleepiness calling to her.

As she snuggled against him, she dimly heard him whisper her name. “Yes?”

A pause, and then a kiss on her forehead.

“Nothing. Go to sleep.”

A shrill ring cut through the pleasant fog of sleep. Everleigh opened her eyes just as Adrian rolled away from her, his absence creating a cool chill against her bare back.

“Sí?”

She smiled at the grumpiness in his voice. Perhaps she could ease his frustration when he got off the phone...

“Qué? Cuando?”

The urgency in his tone made her sit up, alarm chasing away her drowsiness.

Adrian sat on the edge of the couch, tension etched in the tautness of his muscles, the rigid set of his neck.“Estaré ahí.”

He hung up, and for a dreadful moment silence stretched between them. She got up and reached out a tentative hand, touched his shoulder. He flinched and stood, keeping his back to her.

“Adrian...what happened?”

Another long stretch of stillness, filled only by the wild pounding of her heart and the blood rushing in her ears.

At last Adrian turned. She drew back, clutching the sheet to her bare chest. This was not the man who had just made love to her. Gone was the gentle curve of his lips, the softness in his gaze. No, this man’s face was a mask of dark fury. Lightning flashed in his eyes as his jaw tightened, so hard it might have been carved from granite.

“My mother. She’s had an accident.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN

EVERLEIGHSATINthe hospital corridor, her head against the wall and her eyes closed, as she listened to the sounds around her. The squeaky wheel of a medicine cart, the slapping of nurses’ shoes on the floor, the distant cry of someone who had just been given news that changed their life in an instant.

Amazing how after ten years, and even across an ocean, the sounds of a hospital were still the same.

She opened her eyes and glanced down at her watch.
