“And also bad for his wife, Carter’s mom, Brooklyn.”
She tutted and shook her head. “I remember Rigor and my father talking about it. A while ago now, right?”
“Yeah, Carter’s done time since then.”
“You ever done time?”
“No.” He slurped his coffee. “Squeaky clean, me.”
She laughed and cut into her egg, which oozed sunshine orange onto her pancakes. “Yeah, right.”
He chuckled. “Your father’s doing time now, isn’t he?” Wyatt wasn’t sure if it was a touchy subject, but since they appeared to be sharing, he risked it.
“Yeah, he’s got another three to do.”
“Long stretch.”
“And on the east coast. Apparently not enough bars in Arizona to contain him.”
“So you don’t get to see him much?”
“Nah, me and Rigor have ridden out a couple of times, but it’s a long way. Plus, Rigor always has shit to do, since he’s standing in for Pa.”
“I guess.” With the side of his fork, Wyatt cut into the top pancake on his stack. “You ever wondered about getting away from the club?”
“Why?” She tucked into her egg.
He shrugged. “It ain’t for every chick.”
“It’s all I’ve ever known. Grew up spending half my time at the compound. It’s what I’m used to.”
“What about the other half?”
“Mom and Pa divorced, and I lived between them. She’s in Hawaii now. Met some rich dude and moved out there twelve years ago. I’ve been living full-time with the chapter ever since, earning my keep too, by translating.” She glanced out the window at the parking lot, her attention seemingly on his Harley.
He studied her for a moment then, “And your ex, he was a Barbarian?”
“Billy.” She huffed. “No, he wanted to be, and hung around a lot. It’s probably why he dated me, to get in with the club.”
“Asshole.”
“Yeah, that’s what Rigor and Teddy said right before they chased him out of town. Went to New Orleans by all accounts. He had another chick there.”
“I’m sorry you went through that.”
“Yeah, me too.” She faced him again. “What about your ex?”
“There’s a few, but the last one…” He glanced at the server at the next bench. “She worked in a place like this. Worked hard to support her kid, Ben. He was six.”
“You dated someone with a kid?”
“Don’t be so shocked.”
She laughed. “I’m not really.”
He could tell she was a bit.
“So, what happened?” She picked up her coffee.
