“Hello?”
He waved her off. “We need to go.”
“What? Where?”
He sighed at her questions. “Is everything good in here? Can I open this door?”
The care for her equipment surprised her yet again. This man was giving her absolute whiplash, and it made her feel dizzy.
“Yeah, you’re good. Just open it a crack.”
He nodded and pulled the door open gently, mindful of her words. He glanced back at her and waved his hand, making sure that as soon as she walked over to him, he flipped off the lights, bathing the entire room in darkness.
Augusta moved between him and the door, slipping into the hallway. He followed after her, shutting the door behind him before waving her on again. It made her stumble a bit as he herded her back to her room.
His eyes rolled over her torn pants and dirty clothes, the only thing she had in the hotel, so she had to put them back on after her bath. “You should probably change.”
She turned back to him. “For what?”
He didn’t answer and simply grabbed the door and closed it behind her. Trapping her in her dorm room, but this time, without any restraints.
She sighed to herself. What the hell was going on?
A pit started to form in her stomach. She didn’t like not having answers, and she especially didn’t like that he was being cryptic with the information that hedidgive her.
No matter what it seemed she did, she was going to be stuck with him until he found exactly what he was looking for. What that was … well, Augusta was having trouble piecing together.
The more time she spent trying to figure it out, the more her head started to hurt.
Sighing again, she made her way to her closet and stripped out of her filthy clothes. Her skin felt grimy again, but she doubted he would let her take another bath.He probably wouldn’t even answer if I asked, she thought as she rolled her eyes.
Maybe at their next stop, she would get more information.
Pulling out a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, she slipped them on and turned to him.
“All right. So where the hell are you taking me?”
Chapter10
Ray
Ray drove slowly, cruising through the streets with great care. The last thing he needed was to be pulled over when he had a kidnapped woman sitting right beside him.
As he drove, he couldn’t help but glance at her. He found that his eyes lingered and wouldn’t pull away. Her blonde hair shimmered under the streetlights, and her blue eyes glowed as they reflected the low, flickering sheen.
I’ve got to get a handle on myself. I’m here for a reason, and I can’t forget that. I don’t care how much my animal yells ‘she is mine’ or how protective and territorial he is, she was not meant to live in our world. She is good, kind and afraid. Our world would shatter her.
He pulled up in a narrow, dark alley, leaving his car next to the curb. He then took Augusta farther down the alley to a shadowed alcove.
Ray knocked sharply on the door, and a slat clicked open. Hard eyes appraised him briefly, and the door swung open.
“Good evening, Ray. I see you brought a guest,” the large man at the door said as they stepped through.
“Indeed, I did, Gerald. Thanks for noticing. Carry on,” Ray said as he entered the club.
He’d escorted Augusta into a bar where heavy hitters of all kinds came to indulge and break the law. A circle of men played a tense game of poker, a stack of cash and valuable items on the table before them.
Elsewhere around the room, tables set in dark corners shielded the exact actions of the people sitting at them. Ray knew there would be drug deals and weapon sales going on. The bar was mostly full, men and women drinking and laughing. The music filtered through from the adjoining room where the dance floor was, giving an edge of anxiety to the room.
