“Please excuse me, Mr. Cavendish. I need some fresh air.”

He moves back even farther.

“By all means. Run away, Rae. Again.”

I don’t even bother to scold him. I run because that’s the best thing I can do for us.

Tonight isall about securing Holly Morgan and making sure Paxton has this contract signed, sealed, and delivered.

Since it’s Pax, we are at Club Silver with a VIP experience that is another level entirely.

Behind the closed white satin curtains hiding us away from other patrons, we are seated on white couches with cloud-like cushions. Knowing how packed the club is, this amount of privacy is very welcome.

Bottle service offers only top shelf, and whatever your heart desires is on tap. After taco night, I’m keeping it simple and playing safe with Tito’s and soda.

I’m speechless at the level of attentiveness our hostess provides, although there’s no doubt it has everything to do with our host, Paxton.

She eyes him like a snack she intends to devour later, and I don’t doubt he’s prepared to allow it.

Every time she moves past us, I don’t miss how he eyes her long, tanned legs. She wears a black leather miniskirt that just covers her assets and a white halter top with the name ‘Brittney’ across the chest in glitzy silver lettering. Can’t blame the lady for playing Paxton’s game when he slipped her a hundred-dollar cash tip.

Holly Morgan and Charles sit on the couch next to me, their heads lowered together as they talk about God knows what. Her head falls back, and she laughs at something he’s said. Her dainty hand lands on his thigh, a little too familiar for my liking.

What is he doing?

Securing the deal by flirting?

How the hell will that not end in disaster?

“Don’t worry about that,” Paxon says, scooting closer to me. “It’s not worth getting a wrinkle between your eyes.”

“I don’t want him to mess this up because he’s improper.”

“Improper?” Paxton says with a grin.

I nod briskly. He sits back, putting one arm above my shoulder on the couch, leaning in closer like he’s about to impart classified information and doesn’t want anyone else to hear.

“That man is the epitome of professional.”

I flash him anare you serious?expression.

He chuckles. “If you’re thinking about what happened between you two, don’t. Your situation is entirely unique. A case of not knowing who each other was.” He takes a long pull from his bottle of Stella. “If he would’ve known that you’d been hired at Cavendish, he never would’ve touched you.”

I bristle, and I’m not even sure why. He hasn’t said anything insulting.

“Calm down, killer. I’m not saying he wouldn’t want to. He just wouldn’t cross that line. The New York branch of Cavendish Corporation means everything to him.”

“Why?” I ask, curious as to why New York trumps London.

London is his home. It’s where his family is.

“That’s not my story to tell, and frankly, if you two are going to be working together, it’s probably best you don’t ask.”

“Why?”
