Fuck me sideways. This is not how I wanted the night to go.

Colin’s eyes latch onto my neck, and he turns to look up at Sem. I brush my hand against the red bite mark lingering there, and I feel my cheeks heat.

“Oh…” Colin says, his eyes lingering a little too long on Sem’s neck now.

Shit on a stick.

I peer up and see the small purple bruises lining his skin. Well, this is embarrassing.

“Are you two…” Colin begins, but I just shake my head quickly.

“Oh. Nope. No, just friends.”

Sem huffs in annoyance, runs a hand through his hair, and looks away, his jaw clenching.

“Oh, well, in that case, I wanted to…I was going to text you about meeting up this week but got busy with other things. But now that you’re here…do you want to go out sometime soon?”

“Oh,” I say, shuffling on my feet. Sem’s stiff behind me, his arms folded across his chest as he silently watches this entire thing unfold.

I rub at my neck. “Okay, yeah, why don’t you text me, and we can see what works.”

Colin’s smile widens, and he leans over and presses an air kiss next to my cheek.

“Okay, see you soon then. I have to get home to Daniel,” he says, lifting a take-out bag in his hand. “Apparently, he’s starving.”

I force out a small laugh as Colin turns to Sem. “Bye, Sem. Nice to see you again.”

“Fuck off,” Sem mutters, and Colin actually stumbles as he walks away. Probably unsure if he’d heard him correctly. Colin even looks over his shoulder, his brow furrowed at the two of us. But I just smile at him, waving once more, as if to say,Nothing to see here. You must have been hearing things.

Once Colin disappears, I turn to Sem and say in my sternest teacher voice, “You can’t say things like that to people. You are so rude sometimes.”

“So are you. Making plans in front of me withhim.”

I open my mouth to reply but then shut it. Because itwasa little rude. And a bit heartless, if I’m being honest. Sem had just been inside of me, and I'd acted like I was embarrassed by him.

“Okay. You’re right. I’m really sorry. I was just caught off guard by him showing up, and I didn’t know if you wanted me tooutyou, that’s all. Jesus. Let’s just get our food and go eat. Maybe once we’re less hungry, we’ll be nicer to each other.”

“I’m always fucking nice to you.”

Damn, but he’s right. “Well, then at least once we eat, we can talk like…adults.”

Sem clenches his jaw and shakes his head. “Whatever.”

I bristle at his tone but don’t have time to say anything else because my name is called loudly by the person behind the counter. I swipe the bag from the worker and hand Sem the cups.

“I want iced tea, please,” I tell him, and he grumbles under his breath but gets it for me anyway, and then we are on our way back to the truck, Sem carrying everything in his large hands.

Despite me being a total prick, he still helps me inside the cab. But this time, instead of sliding me to the middle seat next to him, he buckles me into the passenger seat and my heart drops a little.

Fuck, he’s pissed.

I’d be pissed too if he did that to me. I acted ashamed to be with him, which isn’t even the case.

It’s not the case at all.

God, I fucked up and the truth is, I don’t even know why I did it.

When he pulls away from the curb, I peek over at him. He’s clenching tightly to the steering wheel and keeping his gaze laser-focused on the road. I can feel the tension rolling off of him the entire drive and he won’t even look at me. I’m so used to him watching me all the time that when he doesn't, it's unsettling.
