“Yes, I have it.” She opened the door and got out. In one hand, she had my bag, and in the other, she had a gun pointed at Joseph. “Get in the car, Brynne.”

“Gina, what are you doing?”

Joseph pulled me behind him. “You gonna shoot me, Gina? You don’t look like an assassin.”

What in the hell was going on?

“I’m not.” Her hand shook. “I was asked to be Brynne’s friend and report her activities. If anything weird happened, I was to call him.”

“Call who?”

“I don’t know his name. As long as my college tuition was paid, I didn’t care. Get in the car, Brynne, or I’ll shoot him.”

I fisted the back of Joseph’s shirt and whispered. “I’ll go with her. It has to be Dorian.”

“So you let someone know Brynne wanted you to bring her the bag.”

“Yes. They’re on their way.”

“You stupid bitch.” Joseph knocked the gun out of Gina’s hand faster than I could blink. I screamed when the gun went off, and a loudpopechoed through the once silent night.

From behind me, tires screeched, and Espada’s car appeared in an instant. I spun around with my hands covering my ears. I didn’t understand what was happening,

“Get the bag and get in the car, Brynne!” Joseph yelled as he struggled with Gina. She fought back, kicking and screaming.

I stood frozen in place like an idiot. Gina worked for Dorian?

“Hey, what’s going on?” a guy shouted from the convenience store entrance. “I’m calling the police!”

“Fuck! Get in the goddamn car, now, Brynne!” Joseph backhanded Gina and she went down.

“Oh my God!” My eyes bulged.

“She’s fine.” He picked up my bag from the ground and the gun. “Get in the car.”

I did as he said, with tears streaming down my face.

Espada peeled out of the lot. “They’ll know my car now.”

“I know. Son of a bitch!” Joseph hit the dashboard again. “We should’ve never gone to get the fucking bag.”

“I’m sorry. This is my fault. I don’t know what’s happening, why everything has gotten crazy.”

“Me either,” Joseph muttered. “You understand that I had to do what I did to Gina to get her to stop, right? She’ll wake up with a headache and probably report what happened. Then it will really get chaotic.”

“There will be warrants for our arrest if she goes to the authorities,” Espada said. “I’ll need to abandon my car.”

“Was thinking that same thing,” Joseph hissed. “I’ll call one of the guys for a ride.”

I slid into my seat, wholly regretful for causing all this trouble. I’d only ever seen this sort of thing happen in movies. How could I involve Joseph in my mess?

I couldn’t make out his whispers. Didn’t really care at this point. From here on out, I’d stay silent and let him do what he felt was needed. After all, he was helping me when he didn’t have to. I was grateful he cared so much about me. I owed him everything.

“Wake up, we’re here.” His warm lips pressed against my cheek.

I lifted my head to look out the window. We were inside a garage.

“Are we at your friend’s place?” I yawned and let him help me out of the truck.
