“K.” I ripped it open and read it to myself first.
Brynne,
Do not go anywhere with Dorian. He tried to kill Bruno.
Leave Montana ASAP. You’re in danger.
You know what to do. I’ll be in touch.
Alfred — 1212
My heart stopped.
“What does it say? It’s bad, right. I know it is.”
“It’s bad.” I tugged her close. “We need to get out of here.” I looked around the lounge for fucking Espada.
She swiped the letter from me and scanned it. “Oh my God. I suspected something was weird when I spoke to Dorian.”
“When?”
“Earlier today. He called to tell me that my dad had a heart attack last weekend. I couldn’t believe he’d wait so long to notify me.” She shivered against me. “He gave me the creeps this time.”
I took my phone out and called Espada.
“What does one, two, one, two mean after Alfred’s name?”
“It’s my birthday. December twelfth. Those numbers are a code, so I would know anything I got from him was legit.”
I hiked my brow in surprise. “Oh.” Espada answered on the first ring. “Yo.”
“Gotta go, now. We’re in the lounge.” I shielded Brynne from wandering eyes and put the phone back in my pocket. “I have a place I can take you that’s safe.”
“Where?”
“About an hour and a half from here.” I couldn’t give her any details. She was just going to have to trust me.
“I have a bag at my apartment I need to get. It has everything I need to leave the country.”
I blinked at her, unsure I heard her correctly. What the fuck? She was prepared to leave the country at any moment?
“I know, I sound crazy. You’re probably wondering who you hooked up with. Let’s just say my dad’s business isn’t on the up and up.” She winced. “Will you really help me?”
Espada appeared beside me and waited for orders.
“We gotta get Brynne out of here. You know the place.” I stared him in the eyes and whispered, “Put them on alert.”
He issued me a sharp nod.
I turned toward Brynne. “We’re going to leave in my friend’s car.”
“We can go in mine.”
“Sweetheart, you’re probably being watched. They know your car.”
She turned white as a ghost.
“Is there a wig you can put on? Different clothes than what you’re wearing?”
