“If he wakes up, I’ll have him call you.” Dorian’s reply eased my worries a little. I had no reason to not believe. He’d only ever been nice to me. This weirdness going on with me probably had to do with Joseph. I was off and hyperreactive.

“Do you promise to have him call me?”

“Of course I will. Try to relax, Brynne. I’ll see you in a few days, and then we can fly home together in my private jet.”

“I have a plane ticket already.”

“You don’t need to fly commercial when you can fly in the lap of luxury. Come on, you know you want to.”

“Yeah, I’m sure it’s amazing.”

“It is.”

“When will you arrive?” I was totally bummed my dad wouldn’t be able to attend my graduation. What was the point of walking now?

“Wednesday evening. Be ready to be wined and dined.”

I laughed. “You don’t have to do that.”

“Baby, I’m going to spoil you like you’ve never been spoiled before.”

Baby? Okay, that was weird. Not even my dad called me baby. “Sure thing, Uncle Dorian. I need to go but make sure dad calls me.”

“I certainly will. Have a good evening.”

“You too.” I ended the call and sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone. I desperately wanted to call my dad, but I didn’t want to bother him while he was resting.

It was just after seven in the evening. If Dad didn’t call me, I doubted I’d get an ounce of sleep. I could watch a show. Something that took my mind off both men who dominated my thoughts.

I would love to talk to Joseph right this second. Just hearing his voice would make me feel better. He’d lost his mom. He’d understand my fears about losing my dad too. Of course, I didn’t have his number, so I couldn’t call him.

There was a soft knock at my door.

“Come in,” I called.

Gina opened the door. “Hey, pizza will be here in twenty minutes.”

“Perfect.” I sighed and lifted my duffle bag off the bed.

“Everything okay?”

“My dad had a heart attack and won’t make it to graduation. But he’s okay. I guess.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“Oh, Brynne. I’m sorry.”

“Me too, but it’s fine. I’m just glad he’s okay.”

“For sure. People are irreplaceable.”

“Yes, exactly.”

She stared at me for a second. “Wanna watch a movie when the pizza gets here?”

I had nothing else going on, so… “Sure.”

“Okay.” She left the room.

I exhaled a strenuous breath. My soul felt restless, full of worry, and something I could put a name to. In the past, when I felt this way, I went to Ted’s. I wondered if Joseph had been there during the week. What was he doing tonight? Maybe he was going to Ted’s.
