I also didn’t need law enforcement sniffing around Karma’s house. Not after she’d confessed to stealing twenty grand from her ex. He could try to get her arrested.
More creaking and rattling.
The safety of my woman and daughter was my priority. I would do anything to protect them—anything.
I rushed back to Karma’s room and threw the door open. “Get dressed. Get Nova.”
“What is it?” Karma flew off the bed.
“Someone’s at the door.” With the house packed up, there wasn’t even a knife in the kitchen to use. “Shit, that’s it.” I found my cut and took out my switchblade.
“What are you going to do?” Terror crossed her face as she pulled on sweats pants and a T-shirt.
“Protect my family. Get Nova.”
“But Abe—”
“Just go to Nova’s room and stay there.” Now wasn’t the time for a discussion.
The alarm blared, startling us.
“They’re inside,” she shrieked.
“Mommy!”
We ran out of the bedroom. Karma went to Nova’s room, and I guarded the only path to my girls.
I prayed I wasn’t outnumbered. It wouldn’t end well for Karma and Nova.Stop it. I couldn’t think the worst or get in my head.
I didn’t hear shit over the alarm, so I stepped toward the movement, ready to pounce. There was just enough light from the streetlamp coming through the curtains, that I could make out it was a man with a gun.
Feeling someone behind me, I glanced over my shoulder at Karma. She pointed to the alarm pad on the wall.
I nodded to proceed. The cops were probably on their way, which would only complicate things.
It went silent, yet my ears were still ringing.
The perp appeared, catching me off guard with his gun.
“Don’t shoot.” I raised my hands, pretending to be afraid.
“Who the fuck are you?” he shouted, pointing his pistol at me
He wasn’t bigger than me. I could take him. If he was alone, I’d have no problem overpowering him.
“I said who the fuck are you?” he yelled.
“Stein?” Karma called from behind me. Fuck, it was her ex.
“Is he one of your biker friends? She whoring herself out for money?” the prick asked, sneering at my woman. “Well, too bad. I need her.” He aimed at my chest.
“Stein, no!” Karma yelled and darted in front of me.
The gun went off.
Nova screamed.
“Baby, you okay?” I shielded Karma on the floor, not feeling any pain.
