“Anything on Minot?” Just because I had my woman and daughter with me, it didn’t mean I could let my responsibilities slip.
“Not yet. I was gonna call you. More FF markings were found on the west side of town.”
“Do you think it’s just some assholes dicking around? I don’t want to waste our resources if there’s no real threat.” I was still a new president, so I tended to overreact, much like I was regarding Stein.
“I was thinking the same. We could be wasting our time when there’s other shit we could be working on.”
“I’m taking Karma and Nova back to Bastion tonight. I plan to stay with them. I need you to keep an eye on things.”
“You got it, Prez. You gonna tell Bone you’re leaving. He is the VP.”
“Yeah, I’ll talk to him. I might send him to Minot since he wanted to go initially.” I didn’t want to reward him for his sucky behavior, but I believed he would do what was best for the club regardless of how he felt about me.
“What about Spectre? You should take him with you to Bastion.”
“No. I don’t need him there.”
“If you say so. I gotta go. My informant from the station is coming.”
“Okay, let me know what you find out.”
“K.” He ended the call.
I didn’t want to talk to my brother right now, but we needed to investigate the Minot situation, so I pushed the call button and listened to it ring.
“Yeah?”
“I just talked to Buff. Nothing on Minot. You should get out there. Boots on the ground is what we need.”
“You sure?” He sounded surprised.
“Yeah. Take Spectre with you and a prospect. I’m needed here.” Karma and Nova were priority number one. Things were in a delicate state with them. I couldn’t risk messing up again.
“All right. We’ll leave tomorrow.”
“Sounds good. Keep me posted.”
“Of course. And Cobra?”
“Yeah?”
“Nova’s a cute kid. I know you’ll be a great dad.” He ended the call before I could reply. It sounded like my brother was at odds with himself. He hadn’t apologized for what he’d done, but I’d take his words as a step in the right direction for mending fences, as Lady M and Karma put it.
I cracked my neck, hoping it would help. It didn’t, so I went back inside.
When I entered the living room, Karma stared at me with a come-hither look. She wanted me, maybe more than I did her, which seemed crazy even to me. I never got enough of that beautiful woman. It was fuckin’ fantastic to finally be on the receiving end after being without her for all those years.
“Abe, come here.” Nova waved me over to the coffee table. “What do you think?” Nova presented her drawing. “Mommy’s side is small compared to yours. I haven’t met her parents before.”
Damn, my heart hurt for my sweet girl. To go her whole life, never knowing where she came from, was fuckin’ sad.
“You’re a great artist.”
“Thanks.” She smiled proudly.
“Tell your dad what kind of leaf this is.” Lady M pointed at the paper and cut her gaze at Karma.
I leaned in for a closer look. No shit, my little girl had drawn a marijuana leaf similar to the one tattooed on my woman’s stomach, except without the words:Stay Free.
