“Yeah, me too. We’ll do it together, baby.”
“I’m sorry, what did you say?” I blinked, wholly stunned.
“We’ll tell Nova together. You shouldn’t have to do it alone.”
“Wow.” If he were here, I’d kiss him.
“What?”
“I thought you’d yell at me.”
“Why would I do that? It’s a big deal telling a child who their real father is. We wouldn’t be in this situation if we both hadn’t fucked up.”
“Abe?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“I like you a little bit right now.” I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling as if my heart would burst.
He snorted. “Like, huh?”
“It’s all I can give you. I’m totally overwhelmed.”
“I know. I’ll take care of you when I get there.”
“How? I’ll be working.”
“Cancel your appointments. Or we can slip into a closet.”
“Sex would be good.”
“Then I’m your guy.”
“I’m ready, Mommy!” Nova hollered.
“I’ll be right there, sweetie.”
“Shit, she sounds adorable. You may need to calm me down when I get there.”
“I can do that.” I laughed, almost feeling swoony.
“We’ll help each other. You better go, so our girl isn’t late for school.”
Our girl.Emotion bubbled into my throat. This man was saying and doing all the things that had made me fall in love with him long ago. He was my Knight through and through. It gutted me to think of all the time I’d wasted hating him and cursing his name.
“Did you tell your family?” I should’ve waited until he was here to ask, but I was a nervous wreck thinking the worst. Like maybe they were planning to take Nova away from me, and I’d never see her again. Losing my daughter was my greatest fear.
“I’m telling them before I leave.”
“Good idea. You don’t want to give them time to plan their attack.”
“I waited so they wouldn’t drive me crazy with questions I don’t have answers for. You have nothing to worry about. They’ll be cool.”
“Okay, if you say so.” But I knew better. Betraying a Knight was the greatest sin.
“You don’t believe me?”
“Abe, this isn’t my first rodeo. I know your family. Why did I come to Minnesota?”
