I was certain Nova was mine, even though Karma hadn’t confirmed my suspicions. When I watched the dark-haired cutie playing on the swings at school, I felt she was mine in my soul.
How the fuck could Karma be so cruel?
You know why, asshole.
I did know why and I hated myself for it.
My woman exited the building and locked the door behind her. I crossed my arms over my chest as I leaned against the driver’s side door of her car.
When she turned around, she jumped back. “Jesus, Abe! Don’t scare me like that! You nearly gave me a heart attack.”
I’d never seen fear flash in her eyes before. It struck me as strange, but I could see how I might’ve startled her.
“About time you got out of there. Why are you late?”
“None of your business. What are you doing creeping around my car?” She shoved me to get out of the way, but I didn’t budge. “Move, Abe. I need to get home.”
“I wouldn’t be waiting for you, if you answered the phone.”
“Really? Have you nothing better to do than stalk me?” She shoved me again. “Move, dammit!”
“When will you sit down and have a meaningful conversation with me?” I tried to be patient and reasonable, treading carefully, so I didn’t screw up my chances of getting her back. Of course, she hadn’t indicated she’d even consider taking me back. I would’ve walked away and never looked back if it had been any other woman.
Karma was my person. Our age difference should be all the proof I needed to show how much I loved her. The day I let myself love her, everything clicked right into place the way it was meant to be. The years I’d spent without her, I’d only been going through the motions of living.
“Let me think.” She tapped her black painted nail on her lips. My gaze traveled over the ink on her arm. If it wasn’t incredibly sexy, I’d be pissed. I had wanted her skin to stay pure and unmarred. She probably had marked herself up to spite me. “How about when hell freezes over?”
“Your sarcastic mouth only turns me on, baby.” I leaned toward her, eyeing her luscious lips. I’d give anything to taste them again.
“Oh, my bad. I meant to frustrate you so you’d leave me the fuck alone.”
“Never going to happen. Why don’t you let me fuck you here in the alley? A good hard fuck might loosen you up.”
“Sorry, but I respect myself too much to sink to such lows.”
“You know you want me.” I wiggled my eyebrows. “God knows I want you.”
“I’d rather join a convent and give up sex.” She screwed up her face as if disgusted. “I’m sure your cock is diseased. I can find someone a thousand times better than you to satisfy me.”
Now she had pissed me off. “I want a paternity test for Nova.” The words flew out of my mouth before I could stop them.
“Who told you her name?” She narrowed her eyes. Christ, she looked as if she could kill me. “There’s no reason for a test. She’s mine.”
“Doesn’t matter who told me. I want proof Nova isn’t mine.”
“Well, I want world peace, but we don’t always get what we want. Now move the fuck out of my way.”
“Stop being difficult, woman.” I grabbed her wrist and put her against the car. “I want answers. I want to work through our shit.”
“Let go of me.” She struggled to break free. “I’m warning you, Abe. I will call the sheriff.”
“It won’t matter. Nothing and no one can keep me from you.”
“Is that supposed to flatter or intimidate me? Because I sure as hell don’t find you charming or scary for that matter.”
I pressed my nose to hers. “I should scare you. I could throw you over my shoulder and take you somewhere no one would ever find you.” I gripped her waist. “I’m about out of patience with you.”
“Let me go.” She held still, staring at me. “Your caveman tactics don’t work on me.”
