“Alright, let me know if you need anything.”
“Will do.” I ended the call.
Why would Eve lie about where she was going?
Why would she be at the Fallen Soldiers clubhouse?
Why was I anxious and my stomach tight?
Fuck no. Don’t think the worst.
Too late.

Jack gazed at me fondly from across the table. We were in the clubhouse, chatting about the weather and what his MC brothers had been up to. I hadn’t yet told him why I was there. Doubt had entered my soul. Talking to Jack about Art might be a bad idea and not at all on Jack’s part, but Art would hate it.
“How’s your friend in Arizona?” He took a long drag of his cigarette as he watched me.
“Fine. How do you know about her?”
“I asked around after you ran away.”
“I didn’t run anywhere. Markey and I just went for a visit. He’s still there.” I sipped my club soda, suddenly feeling like I’d made the wrong decision coming to see Jack.
He snickered and leaned forward, putting his elbows on the table. “You’re lying, Sugar.”
I blew out a breath. “Where’s Turner and the others?” Their club was small. Made up of only the four original men: Turner, Jack, Deacon, and Maverick. They were all from Iowa, served in the military, and were medically discharged for one reason or another.
The Fallen Soldiers MC spent most of their time helping in the community, giving back to the local folks who’d supported them while they were gone and when they returned. Mason City didn’t have much crime, just how the men liked it after fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“When you called, we were going on a run to Missouri. We got some buddies out there.”
“Oh damn. I kept you from your trip?” I dropped my chin to my chest, feeling like a chump.
He reached across the table and took my hand. “I told you before, Sugar, anything you need, I’ll give it to you.”
I pulled my hand away. “I need a friend, Jack. Nothing more.”
He reclined back in his chair. “Okay. So what can I help you with?”
“It’s about a guy, one of the Knights.”
“Shit, Sugar. You’ve fallen for one of them, haven’t you?”
“Why do you sound so surprised?” And just like that, I was on the defense.Way to stay in control, Eve.
“Because you swore to me when we first hooked up that there was nobody in the club who could take care of your needs.”
“Well, I was mistaken.”
“I would’ve never laid a hand on you if there was someone you were interested in. I mean, I was a damn fool, to begin with, for messing around with you when I knew you belonged to the Knights.”
“Gee, thanks. Way to make a girl feel like shit.”
“I’m just saying, you said there was no one.”
