Jaynee

I couldn’t stop shaking. Richard sat across from me in the bar with a smug expression. The place was empty. The celebration for Hero and Tara’s upcoming wedding was over. I hated being the reason the party had ended, why all the joy had been sucked dry.

Zander held my hand under the table. His thumb rubbed mine. The tension radiating off him concerned me. He was hanging on by a thread, but I wasn’t sure he could stay in control. Not even after he pinky promised me he would.

“I can’t believe you’d bring my daughter into a biker club.” Richard glowered at me. “What kind of a mother would do that?”

“She’smydaughter. Don’t you dare pretend like you care about her. You don’t want her. You want me.”

Richard leaned forward, pointing his finger at me. “You took her out of state without my permission. You endangered her life.” The bastard smiled. “I’m taking her, Jaynee.”

“Sheriff, can he just waltz in and take the kid?” Storm asked. I sensed he knew the sheriff on a personal level.

Several of Zander’s MC brothers were hanging in the doorways as if waiting for an order. The mere fact Richard came with the sheriff proved he believed he was in the right. He could take my baby, and I wouldn’t be able to stop him.

My stomach churned.

“I’m not a lawyer, but it looks like he can.” He handed the document to Storm.

“This doesn’t have to get messy, Jaynee. Just get Sadie, and both of you come home with me.” His smug expression made me want to throw up.

Sadie was asleep in the family unit. When Zander and I left his room, he’d told me not to tell where she was. He seemed prepared to go against the law. If it meant protecting Sadie and keeping her with me, I would stand behind anything he did.

“They’re not going anywhere with you,” Zander growled.

“They will if you don’t want to see jail time.” Richard sneered and pushed another paper toward us.

“Jail time? What are you talking about?” My chest tightened as I looked at Zander.

Storm grabbed the paper. As president of Knight’s Legion, he was all up in my business.

Zander raised my hand to his lips and kissed it. “Everything will be okay, baby.” His touch soothed me. My body still hummed after the multiple orgasms he’d given me.

“Only if she and the kid leave with me,” Richard repeated.

“They’re not leaving,” Zander bit back.

A sob caught in my throat.

Storm put the papers on the table and crossed his arms over his chest.

“I have to take him,” the sheriff said.

I cut my eyes to Storm, then back to the sheriff. Who were they talking about?

“I understand.” Storm looked over at Hero. “Call Theo. Have him meet Lynx at the station.”

I vaulted out of my chair. “Why does Lynx have to go to the station?” My heart pounded in my chest.

“For murder,” Richard hissed. “Your boyfriend is a cold-blooded murderer, Jaynee.”

I covered my mouth with a trembling hand as I peered at Zander. “What is he talking about?”

“Don’t listen to him, Jay.” Zander tugged me into his arms. “Trust me,” he whispered.

Trust him?
