“I suppose it’s pleasant,” he said. “Waking up to the sound of birds chirping.”

She bit her lower lip, and he could almost feel it between his own teeth, could imagine the softness of it as his tongue slipped into her mouth. “It is actually.”

They locked eyes for a long moment. Her cheeks grew pinker and he had to force himself to straighten, to vanquish the sudden desire to kiss her.

Not to make a point this time. Not to punish her.

Simply to feel her mouth open under his.

“Well, I should be going.” He looked around the room and reached into his pocket for his wallet. He removed a credit card. “It’s nice in here. You should feel free to make the rest of the house comfortable for yourself as well. It’s your home now.”

Her brow furrowed as she looked down at the outstretched credit card. When she looked up at him again, her eyes looked mossy and inviting instead of cold.

Or maybe that was his imagination.

“Thank you,” she said.

He nodded and started for the door.

“Lyonya.”

He turned, wondering why she always used his full name. “Yes?”

“Are you… will you…?” She sighed. “I’m planning to make dinner tonight. Would you like to join me?”

He tried not to show his surprise. “What time?”

She seemed to think about it. “Around eight?”

He nodded. “I’ll be there.”
