Max nods. “Viktor agreed to use what influence he has with the priest to see if he can have me reinstated, my former sins washed away and all of that. When we return, St. Patrick’s will be my first stop.”
“No inclination to sample the pleasures of the flesh while you can?”
Max smiles ruefully. “The inclination is there, sure. But I’ve done my best to atone for the path I’ve walked so far, and that’s a part of it. Besides,” he adds, finishing his drink. “You’re not the only one who pines for a woman he shouldn’t have.”
I start to ask who he’s talking about, though I’m sure I already know. But Max is already fishing out his billfold, laying cash on the table to cover his drinks as he stands up. “Have a good night, Liam,” he says kindly. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
I linger there for a while longer after he leaves, swirling my whiskey in my glass and looking down into the amber depths, thinking about Ana.A woman I shouldn’t have.
Tomorrow will see us back in the air and on our way to Greece. I can only hope that it will be one step closer to her and keeping the promise I made.
I’ll find you. Wherever you are.
