It was unnerving and exhausting always being on guard, never knowing when or where the next threat would come from. From my experience, I’d seen many women get caught in that trap, thinking they were safe when they weren’t.
Those women paid dearly for their complacency.
I refused to be one of those women.
Nursing my coffee, I had just placed my half empty cup on the kitchen table when Savage walked in carrying Hailey who was busy eating her hand and kicking her legs.
I hadn’t seen Savage since he fled the room, never looking back. Leaving me there alone with them. I didn’t blame him though. I wouldn’t want anything to do with me either. I wondered if he would blame me for everything because of who my father was. Even though I hadn’t seen my sperm donor since I was sixteen, I still felt somewhat responsible for Kitty’s death. Hell, if I had known the club was going to rely on him, I would have warned them not to.
Trusting Toxic was a quick way to get anyone killed.
“There you are,” Savage smiled, sitting next to me.
“You’re talking to me now?”
“Why wouldn’t I? Not your fault your pops is a douchebag that will die a horrible death when Reaper gets his hands on him.”
“Thought you were cleaning up your language for Hailey’s sake?”
“Oh, crap,” Savage grinned. “You’re right. Sorry Princess. Your devilishly handsome Uncle Lucas didn’t mean to say that.”
I rolled my eyes. “You know she doesn’t understand right?”
Gasping, Savage played the affronted man perfectly, “Bite your tongue woman. My Princess is a genius. Just minutes ago, she clapped her hands when I told her a joke.”
“Sure, it wasn’t because you were being goofy?”
“You’re mean today,” Savage scowled playfully. “What’s the matter, didn’t sleep well?”
“No, I didn’t.” I deadpanned.
“Well,” Savage grinned, wiggling his eyebrows, “I’d be happy to help with that.”
Rolling my eyes again, I tried unsuccessfully to hide my smile but couldn’t. The man was just too damn happy today. Why, I had no clue but whatever made him happy was infectious.
The man was seriously a caution.
“So, what do you have planned for the day. Princess and I are going to the park, then we’re going to get some ice-cream and do a bit of shopping. Wanna go with us?”
Leave the compound?
Fuck yeah! I would love to get away from everything, even if it was just for a few hours. Then reality hit, smacking me in the face. Reapers words rang heavily in my head and just like that my elation vanished. “I can’t. You heard Reaper.”
“And he’s busy with his woman. So, if you want to make a break for it, now’s your chance.”
I was seriously considering it.
I did want a break from the club.
I needed to clear my head and figure out what my next move would be. I couldn’t do that if I was sequestered under lock and key. I also knew that if I left this club without Reaper’s permission, he would make damn sure I wouldn’t ever be able to leave again.
That was something I couldn’t chance.
“What’s the matter, Baby? Never pegged you as a follower. Guess Reaper was right about you,” he sighed, getting to his feet.
“What did he say?”
Savage schooled his face and stated clearly, “That you were too meek, easy to boss around, a true Golden daughter.”
