Tessa pursed her lips. “So we’ll do it today.”

An arm wrapped around my shoulders, and I immediately knew it was Vince from his tall, solid form. “We’ll all be here if you want us to.”

“Thanks.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. “I’m going to see where he is.”

I walked to the hall that led to their theater room and called him.

“Hey, sweet girl.”

“Hi, Dad.” My voice sounded hollow, but he didn’t seem to notice. “Are you on your way?”

There was a long pause. “Oh, shoot. I completely forgot about our plans.”

How did he forget shopping for an engagement ring? Wasn’t that the main thing on his mind?

“Juliet got tickets to the Cubs game today, so I don’t think I’ll have time to come out and pick you up and go shopping before.”

Despite my annoyance that he forgot about me, I was relieved to be able to push off their engagement for yet another week. “Okay, but you’re still ready for the race tomorrow, right?”

If he bailed on that after all the training we’d put in, I would get upset.

“Yes, I’ll be home early in the morning, so we can put the bike rack on my car.”

“Okay.”

“Oh, and Juliet got us matching jerseys.” If she weren’t a lying cheat who had it out for my friends, that would have been really sweet.

“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I love you, sweetie. Bye.”

“Love you too.”

I ended the call, then went back to the living room. “He changed plans, so he won’t be here until tomorrow morning before our bike race. I don’t want to tell him until after.”

Tessa and Daniel agreed.

“We’ll wait until you’re ready,” Tessa promised. I wasn’t sure that would ever happen, but I didn’t have the option to postpone it like my dad was with ring shopping. I had three weeks before leaving. Juliet needed to be completely out of our lives before then, otherwise, our transfer would be for naught.
