Normally, I liked Mr. Peters. He was nice to look at, and he’d been extremely helpful this past year. He’d gotten me out of classes with Carter after he assaulted me and made sure I stayed up to date on my school work while I missed classes after being in the hospital. He was someone I’d learned to trust.
“The bell is about to ring, so I’ll let you go so you can meet your friends for lunch. If you need anything or have questions, please let me know.” His smile was so genuine. I returned it and thanked him before leaving.
That wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been, but I was relieved it was over. When I got to the lunchroom, I was the first to the table. When Sky got there, he winked and smiled, and I knew he was thinking about what I told him earlier. Great. He would never let me live this down.
“So where’d you go?” Luca asked once he sat down.
“Mr. Peters wanted to check in about the internship,” I replied, then glanced at Sky. “Did your guidance counselor call you in?”
He shook his head with his mouth full of a sandwich.
“Why would she?” Luca asked. “The paperwork was submitted before you guys left.”
I shrugged, “He asked some basic questions. I thought it was normal after an internship.”
“Maybe it is,” Sky said after he swallowed. “I’ll probably get a call slip in fifth or sixth period.”
Since we had both classes together, I’d find out soon enough.
Gavin, Vince, and Noah joined us, and I could practically feel Sky vibrating with the need to tell them. He glanced at me, and I glared back. If he ratted me out, there would be serious consequences. I wasn’t sure what I’d do, but I’d find something. Like removing all his favorite treats from his house and forcing him to give up sugar for a week. That would probably break him.
He opened his mouth, and I kicked him under the table. He yipped, and the guys stared at him. I smiled innocently. He pressed his lips into a thin line. Message received.
