A little girl follows him in.

“It’s-o-k,” he says with a smile. “My name is Blake.”

I understand his words perfectly.

“And I’m Jayne!” the little girl says, walking straight up to Duri and extending her hand.

The man doesn’t seem angry that I assaulted and robbed him. He seems…kind.

“So-ree,” I say, repeating an apology Trent taught me.

“It’s-all-good.”

A man with raven-black hair comes into the room, his head down, grumbling low in his throat.

Christine’s face brightens. “Ah, he’s Korean.”

I exhale, relieved that I’ll finally have someone to communicate with, but when he lifts his head, his eyes boring into mine, my relief turns to terror.

Weeks Later

“Eva turned her hair pink!” Duri says excitedly. “And one of the chickens pecked me for getting its egg.”

I smooth his bangs away from his face, “That sounds fun—and dangerous,” I add a dramatic flare to my tone.

“There’s a boy they call Rat because he ate a rat when he was out in the wild.”

“Oh…”

“And sometimes I speak English in front of Jayne. None of the others, though.”

“Why is that?”

Duri shrugs. “Don’t want to.”

“Well, I’m glad you had such a full day.”

“Why don’t you ever come out? Sometimes Jayne’s mom eats with us. She has red hair—really red.”

“I…I can’t.”

“Is it because of Dad?”

“You must never say that,” I warn in a hushed tone.

“I hate him.” Duri’s little lip sneers. “I miss Trent.”

I don’t tell him that I miss Trent, too.

Unfortunately, Duri and Hyun miss him so much, it’s been a source of tension for Ji-hoon, and of course, I suffer for it.
