What if it’s all too good to be true?
Afterward, Colt pulls me onto his chest, both of us damp with sweat. Through the window, the sun begins making an appearance. We lay there in silence for a while, and I’m certain he’s fallen asleep until he speaks.
“I meant what I said, Nova. You’re exactly what I want in my life.”
“I hope so,” I say, drawing a circle against his six-pack. “Because I feel the exact same way.”
“Then it’s settled.” He says. “You’re fired. I no longer require your services.”
“Wait, what?” I raise my head and meet his eyes. “Come again?”
“Oh, I will,” he brushes a strand of hair away from my face. “I have to fire you because I’m not leaving this house, and neither are you.”
“What do you mean?”
“This house has never felt like a home.” His dark brow furrows. “Not until you set foot inside it. I want you to be here with me.”
“Really? This is all kind of fast.”
“But you feel it too, don’t you?”
I let out a long sigh. “Oddly enough, I do.”
“Then it’s settled.”
“Almost.” I tease. “You can’t fire me because I quit. I don’t need that kind of reputation. I’ve never been fired in my life.”
“Fair enough.” He says and pulls me closer to him. “Whatever you want, Nova Richmond, you’ve got it.” He kisses my forehead, and I relax into him. As his breathing turns rhythmic, both of us on the verge of sleep, I can’t help but smile. Whatever I want? It looks like I’ve already gotten it.
