“If it’s over, that’s fine, I can accept that, but I won’t accept you are working forhim.”

“Are you jealous? Because I can’t understand why else you would care who I work for.”

“Antonio is a monster. He’s responsible for dozens of crimes. He’s not just a low-level thug, Sadie. The man is conniving and will take you down with him.”

I sit on the chair opposite the sofa, where there’s only one seat, forcing Dmitri to stand or sit across from me, keeping distance between us.

“I don’t plan on doing anything illegal,” I say. “Assuming what you’re saying is true.”

“It is.” He steps closer. “I can assure you that it’s one hundred percent the truth. He’s not a good man.”

I laugh under my breath. “Dammit, Dmitri. I’m not dating him. It’s just a job. Why do you care so much who I work for?”

He inhales a sharp breath but doesn’t answer right away. “He’s dangerous, and I hate to see you get mixed up in his dirty work. He will take you down, blame you for his crimes.”

“I’m a bartender, that’s it,” I say, emphasizing that I’m not involved in anything illegal. “There’s a bouncer at the door checking IDs. I don’t run the books or numbers. I’m not involved in dealing drugs, weapons, or whatever else you think he’s smuggling and dealing.”

He steps closer, my knees knocking against his legs. “I don’t want to see you get hurt, or worse, him come after your family. Does he know that you have a daughter?”

“You’re overreacting.” I hope he’s wrong, that Antonio isn’t more than a family man, and Dmitri has him mixed up with someone else.

“I wish I were.”

“Is that all?” I ask, waiting for him to drop another bombshell on me tonight.

“Dinner tonight was a bit of a disaster. Luka and Hannah are asking what happened. I need you to finish what we agreed on. Two more dates.”

TEN

Dmitri

What a fucking disaster.

When Sadie announced her new job at Moretti’s Bar, she may as well have shouted from the rooftop that she works for the Italian Mafia.

Talk about fucking me over.

If she wanted to get out of the date, all she had to do was say as much.

But the Italian Mafia?

They’re our biggest enemy.

Not that she knows I work for the Russian Bratva. I’ve done well to keep my secret. After stopping by her apartment and discovering the girl is more bullheaded than I am, there’s only one choice left.

Put a guard outside her building and have her under constant surveillance. It’s not solely my orders. Mikhail demands the tail as well. He wants to reassure himself that she’s not using me and reporting whatever secrets she thinks she knows to the Italians.

But I haven’t told her anything.

Even so, I’m happy she has a guard watching her home. I feel better knowing that she’s safe and Allie will be unharmed.

I keep a low profile with Sadie. It isn’t particularly hard considering I have work five nights and the other two, I’m digging around for information on Anton’s whereabouts.

A man like Anton doesn’t just disappear.

And any connections he has are the same as Mikhail and the bratva. To vanish without a trace with Savannah is unheard of but not impossible.

He had help.
