I walk out of her office, a folder filled with all the information I need and a pile of ultrasound pictures in my hand.I drive home, my brain still processing the fact I’m pregnant. It’s not hard to figure out how—Tristan and I haven’t been using protection for a long time because I was sure it would be nearly impossible for me to get pregnant.
Apparently emphasis on thenearly.
I have no idea how Tristan is going to respond. We’ve talked about kids in the generic way that I know he’s open to them, but not set one way or another. But we’ve only been married for a month, and we leave for tour in less than two.
Oh shit…I’m already over three months pregnant. That means I’m going to have a baby while we’re on tour.Okay, so not the most ideal timing, but is there ever a right time to have a baby?
Oh my God, we’re having a baby.
I try to tamp down my excitement because there are so many variables up in the air—Tristan’s possible reaction, touring while pregnant, if the baby sticks to full-term—but as my hand rests on my belly I thought was just bloated, a watery smiles breaks out on my face.
I pull up to the house and quickly walk inside.“Tristan!”I shout, needing to share this with him immediately.
“Out back!”he hollers, and I hear the strum of his guitar and know he’s likely working on a new song.I rush out to the back patio, ultrasound photos in hand.He looks up at me, a smile on his face that falls when he sees me and my tear-stained face.
“Jo?What’s wrong?”he asks, already placing his guitar down and making his way over to me.
“I’m pregnant.”
He stops in his tracks and stares at me.I try to read his face for a hint of how he’s feeling, but it’s like he’s frozen.
“Tris?Did you hear me?”
He clears his throat, and his gaze darts down to my stomach before coming back up to my eyes.“You’re pregnant?”
I nod and nibble on my lip, holding out the ultrasound photos, which he takes with a quiet stoicism. Is he excited about this news?Terrified?Upset? He’s not giving me anything to go off of.
And then he breaks out the most radiant smile and sweeps me up into his arms.“You’re really pregnant. With our baby!”His eyes shine with tears, but his voice is filled with nothing but happiness.
“I am.”
With those two words, he kisses me fiercely, and I know no matter what happens, we’ll figure it out together.
