Page 35 of Roped

“All tucked in?” Oakley asks as she walks into Kaylie’s room.

Her hands are rubbing over her swollen stomach, and I smile as she walks over to my side. Oakley is eight months pregnant with our second baby now. She’s been complaining about her swollen feet and how she feels like a whale, so I know that I’ll be spending the rest of the night rubbing her feet and proving to her how sexy I find her.

Not that I’m complaining.

“Almost. We’re going to read just one more story,” I say, and Kaylie nods her head.

“Mind if I join you?” Oakley asks, and Kaylie nods again as she scoots over in her bed to make room for her mom.

I grab the next book, clear my throat, and start to read. I watch Kaylie as I read and only make it halfway through the story before she’s out like a light. When I glance over at Oakley, I smile when I see that she’s fast asleep too.

I put the book away on the bookshelf and walk as quietly as I can over to the bed to collect my wife.

Oakley and I got married five years ago. We actually went back to that island, to where our relationship first took off. Clara was her maid of honor, and I asked Remy to be my best man. It was just my family and a few of our friends but it was perfect.

Oakley hasn’t talked to her parents since their big fight, and she’s been so much happier since. They were toxic people who only cared about themselves and once they were gone, she saw how much better her life was.

I think seeing how little they cared about her opened her eyes. She stopped putting her effort into trying to earn their approval or respect and instead she started to focus on running the farm.

I had offered to transfer ownership of the property to her, but then we got married and ended up adding her to the title, but it’s been her project. I let her run it however she wants, and just help out when she needs it.

She’s really turned that place around in the last five years. She streamlined some processes and took out some crops that weren’t doing well. I helped her find the best cattle and horses and we’ve added a few more animals over the years.

I carry Oakley down the hallway and into our room. The bed is unmade from when Kaylie and her friends had a tea party on it this afternoon, and I smile as I lay Oakley down and take off her shoes.

She groans and rolls over in her sleep as I start to wiggle her pants down her legs. When I get them to her knees, she blinks her eyes open and gives me a tired smile.

“Trying to get into my pants?” She asks, and I grin.

“Always.”

She lifts her legs, letting me peel her pants the rest of the way off and I toss them into the hamper.

“Arms up,” I order her, and she lifts her arms lazily above her head.

I tug her shirt off and unhook her bra before she lays back in bed. She’s so beautiful. Even with the stretch marks and the swollen feet, she’s still the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen.

“Am I getting lucky tonight?” She asks as I grab some pajamas from the drawer.

“Do you think that you can stay awake for that long?” I ask as she smooths the pajamas down over her baby bump.

I sit on the end of the bed and grab one of her feet to start to rub. She groans, her eyes drifting shut, and I know that she’ll be out soon.

“That feels nice,” she says, and I press harder as my thumbs work her arch.

“We have that doctor appointment tomorrow, and then it’s Gwen’s birthday party after that,” I remind her, and she nods.

“I need to wrap her gift still,” she says, her eyes drooping even more.

“I did it this afternoon,” I tell her, and she smiles.

“You’re the best.”

“I know,” I tell her as I switch to the other foot.

Oakley’s eyes drift shut as I rub, and I smile when I hear her breathing even out. She’s been running around so much lately that I’m not surprised she’s exhausted. I’ve tried getting her to take it easy, to pull back a little bit, but she’s so damn stubborn.

I finish rubbing her foot and grab the blanket to tuck her in. My phone buzzes as I get ready for bed myself, and I smile when I see that it’s a text from my brother, Wyatt.

Wyatt:Kennedy and I are all set to watch Kaylie next weekend.

Kai:Thanks. See you tomorrow.

Oakley doesn’t knowit yet, but I planned something special for our fifth wedding anniversary. We’re going to go to this fancy cabin a few hours away to relax for a few days. It’s part anniversary trip and part babymoon, and I’m hoping that it gives both of us a chance to reconnect. Also, maybe it will give Oakley a chance to take it easy and relax for a few days.

I’ve already worked it all out. Remy and Griz are going to look after the farm for the weekend, and Wyatt and Kennedy are going to watch Kaylie for us.

I plug my phone in to charge, and slip into bed beside my beautiful wife. As I wrap my arms around her, I grin. It took us ten years to finally admit to how we felt for each other, but that’s nothing when I realize that I have her for the rest of my life.
