“Get out of the car,” the guy demanded.

Greer pushed out of the door and stood.

“You’re carrying, are you, big guy?” The guy looked pointedly at the pistol on Greer’s hip. “You just try to pull that on me and I’ll kill you without blinking.”

Greer said nothing, though he knew he probably had better training. His reaction time and accuracy always impressed everybody who saw him draw and shoot. As evidenced by how quickly he’d shot Travis.

“Put the gun in the car.”

Pulling the gun slowly out, Greer set it back in the car and then turned to the officer.

The guy glared up at him. “Now start talking and start talking fast. Why are you burning through my town and why do I have a notice that I’m supposed to let you cruise on through like it’s your personal parade route?”

Greer shook his head. “Emergency.”

“I’ll give you an emergency. You can explain to me what’s going on or I can arrest you and let your high-up official come and get you out. How do you like that?”

Greer tried for humble. “Sir. I’m sorry.”

“Not yet, you’re not.”

Greer took a deep breath. He’d never had a problem with a police officer in his life. Sheriff Reed Peterson was a friend to him and his family. He could completely understand this guy being mad that he’d been going so fast through his town and not liking somebody higher up telling him he had to permit it, but Greer was only twenty minutes from Mesquite and Emery. Even though she didn’t want him around, he was certain she needed him. He had to get to her.

“Please,” he said in the most conciliatory tone he’d ever used.

The guy blinked at him. “Why don’t you try to walk in a line and we’ll see how long I can detain you?”

Greer held in a groan and hoped he didn’t sway as he walked. With how tired and anxious he was, he was about ready to fall over.
