White marble was everywhere, from the floors to the front desk and to the back wall behind it that had a water feature dripping into an endless pool below it. All of it made to look aristocratic with a posh sensibility.

Damn … this place is fancy …

Maverick led her down to the labs that had key-coded security … something that Pilar could appreciate. At least here, she wasn’t worried that he’d be hurt or kidnapped.

Not wanting to be in the way of whatever research was going on, she’d decided to stay in the small computer room that had a large window overlooking the lab.

She’d almost laughed when Maverick had donned a lab coat and a pair of plastic goggles over his eyes, but the second he’d stepped into the lab, he commanded the room.

She couldn’t help but sneak glances at him every so often, trying her best to occupy her time with solitaire on her phone. It was clear that all of the other techs in the room respected him, listening to his every word whenever he stopped to review work that had already been done.

Pilar’s phone vibrated in her hand, forcing her to tear her gaze away yet again.

It was a text from her sister, reading:you fall in love with your geek yet?

She snorted softly to herself. Unbeknownst to Lydia, her so-called geek was indeed her mate. A hilariously bizarre twist of fate, some might say.

Pilar had no idea when she was going to tell him …ifshe was going to. It all seemed like incredibly poor timing, especially with the threat of Maverick’s safety being at stake. She didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks when it came to getting involved with him.

Neither of them could afford the distraction.

Deciding to ignore her sister, for the time being, Pilar locked her phone and set it on the desk. She leaned back in the computer chair and rubbed her face.

I really wish my mate wasn’t a human … that would make everything so much easier.

Though, then again, would she have even come into contact with him if hehadbeen a shifter? She never tended to hang around male shifters … mostly because they could be overbearing assholes.

Not to mention they were possessive as all hell.

She wasn’t exactly the type to want to drop to her knees and beg for that kind of attention anyway.

Shaking her head, Pilar sat back up in her chair and grabbed her phone again to text her sister back.

You destroy my place with any raucous parties yet?

Her sister immediately shot a text back, you’re funny if you think I have enough friends to actually host a rager.

Next to her, the door to the lab was pushed open, causing her to look up from her phone again. Everyone in the lab filed out, shedding their coats and goggles while they headed through the other set of doors.

Pilar craned her neck, seeing Maverick heading out of the lab last.

He smiled at her and pulled his goggles up on top of his head.

“Lunch break.”

She turned to look down at her phone. Damn, that time already?

Nodding, she rose from the computer chair and stretched, feeling a few joints crack in the process.

“You hungry?”

She let out a slow exhale, pocketing her phone. “I could go for something.”

“Perfect. Let’s head to my office. I’ll order us something from there.”

Following him out into the hallway, she watched him pull off his goggles and lab coat, slinking both of them over his arm.

“My office is just down here.”
