There is no way I will ask him about Kai.
It’s ridiculous to call someone overseas to find out what the dinner was about when Kai is here in New York.
“Yeah. So that’s that. Other than that, I was busy with my job and everything else.”
I go quiet while he stays silent.
He probably gets his drink or snacks as he thanks someone in Spanish.
Soon there is less noise in the background.
“What’s going on, baby?” he asks.
I set the phone down and put him on speaker.
I don’t know how to say this without going back to Kai and sounding too emotional.
“I think I want our little hotel room back…” I murmur.
No words come from the other end of the line.
And then he sighs.
“I want it too, baby, but that’s no longer possible…”
Him acknowledging that makes my heart ache.
“What makes you say that?” I ask.
“He won’t allow it to happen.”
I straighten my back.
“How do you know that? Did he say something to you?”
“No, he didn’t. He doesn’t need to. Last time I talked to him, I got this feeling he wasn’t crazy about sharing you with us again.”
“How, um…? How did you get this idea?”
“I don’t know. Did he tell you otherwise?”
“No. We haven’t had the chance to talk about these things… Lately.”
“Right. Well… He was tense every time I talked about you. But you said you didn’t want to talk about him,” he comments in a softer tone, a grin lining his voice.
“Yes. He is not the only reason I need our little hotel room back.”
“You feel lonely.”
I smile.
“How do you know?”
“It’s not that hard. I know how things get in New York before Christmas. It’s beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but you better have someone to spend time with. That’s why I’d rather be here. Plus, it’s summer here.”
“So you’re there for pleasure?”
“Business and pleasure. I’m coming to New York for you.”
