RAVEN
I feel better.Much better. His phone is no longer an issue, and I’m grateful he’s given me something important.
Kai has proved he is accountable to me and I’m important to him. The information he has provided, while maybe not entirely reassuring, considering there’s a burglar on the loose, is more than nothing.
We spend the following day at the racetrack and later at the pool, sunbathing and swimming.
Come Saturday afternoon, he walks out of his place, heading to the building gym to work out while I get ready for dinner.
My phone rings around five.
I tap my phone screen to take the call and put Giana on speaker.
I splay my fingers over the table and wait for the nail polish to dry.
My friend’s face fills the screen.
She looks at me with sleepy eyes.
“What took you so long?” I ask.
She yawns. And laughs.
She seems in a good mood.
“Things okay?” I ask, smiling.
“Mm-hmm… More than okay.”
She picks up a mug with a few words painted across the red background.
‘Stay happy.’
“You talked to him?” I ask, impatient while she sips coffee.
“I sure did,” she says, a playful smile twisting her lips.
“Okay… I’m listening.”
She gives me a summary of what happened last night. The Christmas party was a success, and the food was delicious. And for the first time since she started working in that medical office, the Cute Doctor––this has become his nickname––has had a private conversation with her.
“He liked your dress,” I offer.
She laughs.
“We didn’t talk about my dress.”
“Did he notice it?”
A cute smile sprouts on her lips.
“He glanced at it.”
“That’s it?”
“It’s enough. We talked,” she murmurs. “And he is single.”
