Does he know Alejandro, Francisco, and I have spent some time together?
Not once had Alejandro’s phone rung. Alejandro didn’t even know where Kai was.
And now, Kai suspects I went home?
And where is Kai?
I clear my throat and give him a faint smile.
“And when exactly did you talk to him?” I ask.
“We just had a meeting,” he says curtly, his attention going to the concierge clerk again as if he just remembered something.
He looks at me.
“I have to go,” he says before leaving.
He stops at the concierge desk before heading to the restaurant.
I barely breathe.
Frozen in the middle of the lobby, I process the information, the clerks looking at me, only moments away from asking me if I’m okay.
I try to think… Think.
Is he here? Is Kai meeting Roman for lunch? No. Roman said they had met. And he came from somewhere else.
Their meeting must’ve taken place outside this hotel.
I need to make some inquiries.
Running nervous fingers through my hair, I put a confident smile on my face and go to the reception desk.
“Hi. I’m late for a meeting. Can you please tell me where I can find Kai Walker?”
The woman smiles and tips her gaze to her computer screen.
“He hasn’t booked a meeting room today. In fact…”
Her lips purse as she peruses the information on the screen with increased attention.
“He checked out last night.”
Heat sweeps my back.
“Do you have any idea where he went? At the airport, by any chance?” I suggest.
“I’m afraid that’s all I know. It’s possible he’s used one of our limousines. I can ask the drivers.”
I flick my hand up.
“No. It’s okay. Thank you.”
Swept by a storm of conflicting emotions, I turn around, and after hesitating for a few seconds, I walk into the restaurant.
It would be odd to just pop in, pretending that I’m checking the menu when in fact, I’m interested in who Roman is meeting for lunch.
I plot, and plot, and pull to the side, where I scoop out my phone and check the screen as if reviewing some important information when several couples come my way.
