“I have a hard time believing that.”
“Believe it. The whole game has been designed with that in mind.”
“How? And who does that?”
“He does.”
“Has he done it before?”
“No.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Kai has a particular taste when it comes to this. His brain is wired differently. He likes what he likes. He liked you from the beginning, and he knew you shared his taste, despite you not having the slightest idea. This whole thing was designed to bring you to him in the end. To have fun. And allow us to consummate everything we needed to consummate. Forget about the rules. The rules are misleading. They always were. And sex is so chemically charged. And there’s chemistry galore it’s impossible not to feel something for the other person.”
I ponder his words.
“How do you imagine this? I mean… Let’s say he and I would end up together. What would happen to you and Francisco? I thought everybody would walk away, no questions asked. No reference ever to what had happened. Would that be it?”
He shrugs.
“I don’t know.”
“Would we not talk to each other?”
He laughs.
“Never say never. I mean, friendships can go bust in a second, but no. I don’t think so. We’d respect his choice. And yours, of course. You’d be on your path. And whatever life had in store for you, it would be great for you and all of us as well. We would respect that. But if that happened, you two would be different people, and Francisco and I would regard you differently. I’m not afraid of that outcome.”
“I am.”
My words make him focus on me.
Our eyes talk.
“What if… Like now. Like yesterday. And yesterday night… He and I go different ways. He’s pissed or whatever. And I feel like I’m adrift on an ocean of uncertainty, and I seek you. Like I have…” I say, feeling a lump in my throat. “Because you know, I feel like I can’t sleep, and I just need you to hug me…”
I stop, my heart breaking because I see what this is… Everything he says is true. Everything makes sense. But the things I feel inside seem too strong and too much to bear.
“What would happen then, Alejandro? And what would you be to me? A friend? What if I wanted more? What if I’d seek your calmness and the way you make me feel? The quiet after the storm? How would that work for me? For us?”
His eyes glint with emotion.
“That’s the thing," he says… “There are things that you don’t know. If you end up with him, he’ll be everything I am to you and so much more.”
