KAI

At the firm.

“Good morning, sir.”

I glance at the unfamiliar face without stopping.

“Who are you?”

The woman flashes a smile while walking briskly next to me. We’re both heading to my office.

The firm brims with people.

“Your secretary for the day, sir.”

“Uh-huh? What happened to––?”

“She’s sick, sir.”

“Is she okay?”

“Yes, sir.”

I push through the door with her following me closely.

“Is this your first day with us?”

“Yes, sir."

“Tell me about yourself,” I say, sliding my phone and keys onto the desk and taking off my suit coat.

She turns to stone in the middle of the room. This clearly isn’t what she expected from me.

“Me, sir?”

“Yes.”

My request confuses her. Honestly, I never question the HR Department's decisions, and micromanaging has never been my gig, but I like to know the people I am working with. That includes the drivers and the secretaries.

“What do you want to know?” she asks.

I slide into my seat and glance at the computer screen before going over a few emails.

“You’re a temp?”

“Yes.”

“Do you prefer to be a temp?”

“No. Not really. But it helps with my current situation.”

I flick my eyes to her.

“I have a little girl, and my husband works in the evenings. I’d prefer a part-time, but it’s hard to find the schedule that I like.”

“Remote work?”
