But Ken was already storming up to the stage. Nicky had a bad feeling about this. She chased after.
As the two agents walked on stage, confusion took over the room. Ken and Nicky held their badges up.
"FBI!" Ken's voice boomed. "Jordan Katz, we need to speak to you!"
"What?" Jordan exclaimed, his face pale.
But it was Frank who stepped up to Ken. "What the hell are you feds doing here ruining my retirement party?"
"Step aside," Ken said. "We're taking Jordan Katz with us."
"Like hell you are. You're not taking anyone," Frank said, stepping even closer to Ken.
"If you don't get the hell out of my way," Ken said, "I will arrest you."
Frank's face flushed red. "You try that, you little prick, and I swear to God I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison."
Nothing happened for a moment, but then Ken stepped even closer to Frank, their faces inches apart.
"I'm not kidding," Ken said.
Frank's giant fist flung at Ken's face, hitting him right in the eye.
The whole room gasped. Chaos unleashed. But all Nicky could think of was Jordan--who was using the chaos to slip off stage, into the crowd.
Not on my watch, Nicky thought. Ken was a big guy--he could handle himself, so Nicky dashed past him and Frank as they duked it out and tailed Jordan through the crowd.
He was moving fast, but Nicky was faster. She'd been trained for this, and she was in top shape.
She knew how to run, and she knew how to run fast. She'd always been an athlete, and she'd always excelled at sports, and she knew she had the potential to be one of the best agents.
"Jordan Katz, FBI!" she yelled.
Despite what was going on, people cleared out of her way. Most of them had no idea what was happening, but they must've known that she was serious.
Nicky saw Jordan reach the back of the room, heading for the exit. She changed paths, bolting toward the door. She got there a few seconds before him, and she yanked it open.
He stood there, his eyes wide. "No!" he shouted, but it was too late. Nicky was ready. She leapt toward him, and he fell forward, tripping over his feet.
She jumped on top of him. He tried to fight back, but Nicky knew exactly how to pin someone down. She pulled her cuffs out and slammed them on his wrists.
The door opened behind her. Moments later, Ken appeared with what was definitely going to become a black eye. Nicky hauled Jordan to his feet.
"You're going to regret this," Jordan said, still trying to spit out threats to her, but she didn't even acknowledge him.
Ken grabbed Jordan's elbow and held him still. "We're going to get you for this," Jordan said, his face growing red.
"Give it up, Katz," Nicky said.
"You don't know what you're messing with," Jordan said.
"I've never been more sure of anything in my life," Ken said. He helped Nicky haul Jordan toward the car.
"We'll see about this," Jordan said. "I'm going to sue the FBI. You're going to be sorry you messed with me."
"You'll be in jail before you have a chance," Nicky said.
The other police officers were looking at the scene, maybe considering going in to stop them, but they never did. Good move. Nicky shoved Jordan Katz into the back of the rental car.
