He glances at me. “You mean after you lied to my face last night?”

I press my lips together but say nothing.

“You taught me well, brother, never to take no for an answer. I wasn’t satisfied with the tech guy telling me what couldn’t be done. So I got someone else on it. Had to pay through the fucking nose but here we are.”

Shit. “Well, it’s over. Take your men and get the fuck out. I need time alone with my girl.”

“But—”

“Don’t make me repeat myself, frati. You took a shot at my future wife. Thank the Madonna you still have the use of your vital organs.”

“Well…technically I didn’t. You attacked me and the gun went off—”

“Technically, I hear you don’t need your spleen,” I state calmly, acid in my voice. “I’m happy to slice it off with a blunt knife right now. Or you can leave and we’ll discuss this later. Much later. Your choice.”

Gio looks poleaxed for a moment.

He opens his mouth, like he has more to say, but the look I slant him convinces him to get while the going is good.

He nods and backs away. A few minutes later, I hear vehicles driving away.

Then I settle into the armchair and plot how to salvage the devastation I’ve caused.
