GRANT
My phone rang, and I looked at the display.
“It’s X.”
Jacob nodded. “I’ll go work on lunch.”
“No. You’re staying with me.”
“You want me in the meeting?”
“I don’t want you out of my sight, not after that.” I couldn’t stand how close he’d come to being harmed by Evan. I pulled him to me as I answered the call.
“We’re all set,” X said.
“So the asshole agreed to be escorted onto the property and meet with us? Alone?”
“It took some convincing, but I’ve personally guaranteed his safety.”
“I know you never go back on your word, but does he?”
“He’s trustworthy. You’ll understand better once you meet him.”
X and his fucking secrets. “What aren’t you telling me?”
The son of a bitch ended the call.
TJ and Colton were serving as escorts, so I took Jacob to the basement room where we were meeting. The space was built to serve as a command center. While I contacted TJ, Jacob stared at the huge screens on the walls and the long table that could seat twelve.
“We’re close to the house,” TJ confirmed. “Is everyone ready?” I glanced at the men who were seated. Both my brothers and Madison were there. “Yes. Bring him in.”
I paced the room, unable to sit still like the others while I waited.
When the door opened, I instantly knew what X meant. This wasn’t some random FBI agent who could disappear as easily as Ghost. It was Ghost.
When I’d known him in the marines, I would have said he was a man whose word I could trust, but now he’d come after me and my brothers.
He held my gaze and gave a short nod. “Grant.”
I punched him, getting in a good hit to the jaw. He stumbled back, hand against his cheek, but he didn’t go down.
The bastard smiled as he rubbed his injured face. “I probably deserved that, but you won’t get another one for free.”
I huffed. “There was nothing free about that. I caught you off guard.”
“It won’t happen again.”
“Did you really think you could just walk in here and we’d pick up where we left off? Have you forgotten how you disappeared with no explanation? All I was told was that you’d been transferred.”
“I can’t give you any details, but my leaving had to do with being recruited for an FBI mission.”
“Was that mission focused on betraying us too?”
He sighed, and his G-man facade faded. “No. If you’ll let me, I’ll explain my role in this.”
“Explain why you shot at us?”
