“I want to learn how to ride, and I am safe out here.”
Grant huffed. “If anyone is going to teach you to ride, it should be me.”
“Oh my God, you’re jealous.” Rhys burst out laughing.
“I’m not jealous, I’m…”
“What? You know I’m a better teacher.”
“If Jacob wants to ride, he should be with me.” Grant’s face was bright red now, and I loved that tough as he was, his brother could still make him blush.
Rhys turned my way. “Wow. I didn’t know he was going to go all caveman on us. I hope you know what you’ve gotten into.”
Was Grant really that jealous? Rhys was totally professional. If he needed to worry about anyone, it should be Rogue. He loved to flirt, though he wasn’t serious about it. If he’d wanted to be with me, he could have pushed that when he’d helped me get away from Trey.
“I’ve never questioned your abilities with horses,” Grant said.
“Uh-huh. Then why not have me teach Jacob?”
“Dammit, Rhys. If he wants lessons, I’ll teach him. I don’t have to defend myself. I’m in charge here.”
Rhys clenched his hands into fists. I’d never seen him look truly angry before, but I thought he might take a swing at Grant. “We’re not in the marines anymore. I don’t take orders from you.”
“You work for me.”
“Don’t. You wouldn’t be doing all this”—he waved his hand toward the barn and the pastures—“without me. If you’re going to be a dick who tries to order us around, Rogue and I won’t stay.”
“You’re speaking for him too?”
“Grant?” I didn’t want to cause trouble between them. I didn’t know exactly what was going on, but they didn’t need to fight over me.
He turned to me, looking surprised, like he’d forgotten I was standing right there while they fought about who was going to teach me to ride.
“I feel safe with Rhys because he’s your brother, and I know you trust him around me.”
Grant closed his eyes and exhaled.
“There’s a lot going on right now,” Rhys said. “And your world has definitely flipped upside down recently, but that’s not an excuse to be an asshole to me.”
“Fine. You’re right.”
“Do you have time to give me a lesson now?” I asked.
Grant looked at his phone. “No.”
“But he’s going to anyway,” Rhys said. “Tell me what you were going to do, and I’ll take over so you can have some time with Jacob.”
“A minute ago, you didn’t want me here, and now—”
“I didn’t want your attitude. If you’d asked nicely, I would have suggested this to start with.”
“Why are you such an asshole?”
Rhys laughed. “I think you mean why am I always right.”
“Get out of here.”
“Tell me where to go since you love giving orders.”
