I bat my eyelashes. “Me? Nothing. Why?”

He grunts.

I poke his chest. “Don’t call me a liar.”

“I didn’t say anything.”

“I heard your grunt.”

I wiggle on his lap until I’m comfortable. His eyes fall closed, and he moans. His hands grab my hips, and his fingertips dig in. “You need to stop, my little temptress.”

I’ve never been called a temptress before. I like it. I bite my lip. “I’ll stop as soon as you tell me why you won’t give us a chance.”

His fingers flex on my hips. “You promise?”

I bite my lip and trail a finger down his chest. “Unless you don’t want me to stop.”

He snatches my finger before I can reach the snap of his jeans.

“Stop tempting me and I’ll tell you.”

I clear my throat and lean back. “Listening Ashlyn is ready and waiting.”

He stares at me for a moment before admitting, “I can’t make a woman happy.”

I wait for more, but apparently, this is it. “You’re joking?”

“I’m not joking. I can’t be with you because I can’t make you happy.”

I bark out a laugh. “I think you’re confused. You made me happy – twice if I recall – the other night.”

“Sex isn’t the problem.”

“Then, what is?”

“I told you. I can’t make a woman happy.”

“What are you basing this stupid ass idea on? Your marriage to Mrs. Queen Bitch?”

He frowns before glancing away.

I slap his shoulder. “You are! Dude, you should know better. No one can make Queen Bitch happy. It’s how she earned the title Queen of all the bitches. Hell, she was probably born with a scowl on her face.”

He lifts me off his lap and stands. “I’m telling you, Ash. I can’t make you happy. I refuse to enter into a relationship when I know it’s doomed from the start.”

“When did you become a fortune-teller? And can you give me the numbers for this weekend’s lottery?”

“Don’t make light of the matter. I’m being serious.”

“I’m sorry, but I find it hard to be serious when you just keep repeating the same words over and over again. And the words you’re repeating constitute one of the most insane things I’ve ever heard, and I grew up in Winter Falls.”

“This discussion is over,” he says and tries to walk away.

I wrap my arms around his waist to stop him. “Nope. You’re not leaving here until you tell me the truth.”

“I am telling you the truth,” he grits out.

“Not the entire truth.”
