“I mean… he has to grow up someday, right?” I shrugged, because I wasn’t sure I believed the words coming out of my mouth.

“You know he has his most recent flavor here tonight, right? The ditzy blonde who had her tongue halfway down his throat? Like who does that at a party with friends? Get a room, for crying out loud.”

“I know—” Before I could say anything else, she got up and walked away.

I followed her back to our seats and sat next to Rhett as she grabbed her purse.

“I’m heading home. Early day tomorrow.”

“You okay to drive?” Rhett asked.

“Yup. Totally fine. Have a good night, you two.”

I gave her a small smile, and she returned it before walking away.

We sat there for a little while longer, listening to Jackson play the guitar and sing a few songs with his sister. Rhett leaned over and brushed his lips softly along my neck, sending goose bumps down my arms. I would have never guessed he was so into public displays of affection, but it settled my nerves having him so willing to show everyone we were together.

“You ready to go?” he asked, but his warm breath against my skin was destroying my focus.

“Huh?”

“Trouble concentrating?” he whispered, running his hand through my hair.

I turned my head slightly. His hooded eyes meant I wasn’t the only one affected.

“Two can play this game, you know?” I bit my lip and placed one hand on his thigh.

I lifted my beer bottle to my lips to hide my smile as his eyes widened.

“Let’s get out of here.”

Ready to be alone with him, I nodded.

It hit me how nervous I’d been at the beginning of the night, but in that moment, it just felt right, like we had been doing it for years.

Rhett was barely in the truck before we reached for each other. A mix of hands, lips, and tongues. I wasn’t even sure who initiated it, but I found myself straddled on his lap. When his fingers brushed against my stomach as he moved them up under my shirt, I rocked against him, needing the friction. He groaned and broke the kiss.

“We should stop before this goes too far and I end up fucking you in the back seat.”

I sighed, knowing he was right. The last thing we needed was for our friends to see us getting it on in his truck.

“I wish you could stay with me again tonight,” he said, resting his head against my shoulder, his heavy breaths slowing down.

“Me too. But I can’t leave Brendan with your parents again. You know he’s still not a great sleeper. Your mom won’t admit it, but she was exhausted today and still offered to watch him tonight.” Reluctantly, I climbed back over in my seat.

“I know.” He took my hand in his and started up the truck.

When we pulled into his parents’ driveway, he shut off the truck and turned to me. “Can I pick you and Brendan up tomorrow at eleven?” He tucked a piece of hair behind my ear.

“Yeah, that sounds good.” I twisted my hands together. “Do you want to come in?”

He gripped my chin with his thumb and forefinger, leaning forward until our breaths mingled.

“Desperately. But I’m a thirty-year-old man, and I’m not sure my parents would appreciate walking in on us going at it on their couch.” His lips brushed gently against mine, and when he pulled away, he placed a soft kiss on my forehead before exiting the truck to come around and open my door. He wrapped me in an embrace, and I loved standing there listening to the sound of his heartbeat.

Once inside, I leaned against the front door, and a sigh escaped my mouth. Tonight had been perfect, and I couldn’t wait to spend tomorrow together, just the three of us.

I prayed it went just as smoothly. Adding Brendan to the mix, even with the way Rhett loved him, would change the situation completely, and I hoped Rhett would be able to handle it.
