“Kiss me, Rhett,” I demanded before I lost my nerve and talked myself out of this moment.

That was apparently all the invitation he needed, because then his mouth was on mine in a deep, punishing kiss. It was everything we had been holding back. I was drowning in desire as the two of us were a clash of lips and tongues. Our hands were everywhere. Mine found their way under his shirt to roam over his strong back muscles. His hands were in my hair, then grabbing my ass before trailing back up to cup the sides of my breasts. It was desperate, and there was no doubt where this was finally heading.

But our moment disappeared when the ringing of his cell pulled us both back to reality.

“Fucking hell,” he said as he dropped his head to my neck. I could feel his breath against my skin, and it sent another wave of desire through me.

His mouth trailed back up my neck. The rough scratch from his stubble that followed his path had me clenching my thighs together and wishing we didn’t need to stop. He sucked on my bottom lip before kissing me hard.

I pushed him away because I recognized the ring tone.

“You know you gotta answer.”

This shit only happens to us.

“Do I? I’d rather go back to kissing you.”

The sound that escaped me was half chuckle, half moan. I was still hungry for him. “Yes, you do. Then you can go back to kissing me.”

He pushed off the wall and took a step back, fishing his phone out of his pocket.

“What?” he snapped into the phone.

My mouth twitched as his free hand adjusted his hard cock uncomfortably bulging against the zipper of his jeans.

“Wait, what…? What the fuck do you mean by forced…? Did you call the police…? Okay, I’ll check her apartment.” He ended the call and stared at me with indecision in his eyes.

I could feel it in my gut that something wasn’t right. But before I could ask what was wrong, he cradled my jaw with his hand and kissed me again.

“Rhett, what’s going on?” I demanded, after pulling back from his kiss.

“Ineedto go. I don’t want to, but I…” He paused. “I’m sorry.”

Reluctantly, he shifted away from me and advanced toward the front door.

“Rhett, talk to me. Please.”

He didn’t turn around, just grabbed his keys. His hands balled into fists, and he leaned them against the door, his back still to me. “Sarah’s in trouble. Drew, her ex, showed up at the restaurant and basically dragged her out of there, threw her in his car, and drove off.”

I swallowed thickly, knowing it was time to tell him what I knew. “I’ll go with you.”

“No. This isn’t your mess, and I shouldn’t drag you into my drama.”

I came up behind him and placed both hands on his back. I could feel his spine go rigid at my touch before relaxing. “I’m going with you. And I need to tell you something on the way there. Let’s go.”

But fear hit me with a force that felt like a punch to the gut. The thought of going anywhere near Drew made my skin crawl.

I should have told Rhett after it happened, and yeah, I had my list of reasons why I didn’t, but maybe so much could have been avoided if I would have.

Not realizing the turmoil I was dealing with, he reluctantly nodded.

A minute later, we were driving toward the one person in the world neither of us expected to see today. Instead of hoping I didn’t have to see her before I left for Asheville, I was praying we made it to her in time.

Chapter Thirteen

Rhett

My knuckles werewhite as I gripped the steering wheel, and I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted blood, waiting for Bella to continue.
