Holly nodded.
“Girls?”
Nolan walked into the room and looked in the bathroom and closet before crouching down to look under the bed.
“Hey, come out, you two. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Jonah and I would never let anything happen to you.”
Holly saw Caylee nod, and they both worked their way out from under the bed.
Nolan pulled Caylee into his arms at the same time Jonah came through the door.
Holly could tell he was relieved and wrapped his arms around her.
“You guys scared us,” Jonah said.
Holly squeezed his waist. “We’re sorry.”
“How about we show you a safe place you can hide after Dustin leaves?”
Holly nodded. That would make her feel safer.
“Let’s go and meet him.”
Holly balked. “Wait, we’re only in your shirts.”
“It covers you both just fine. They are so big on you they could be dresses.”
Holly smiled. She wouldn’t go that far but took his hand and let him lead her down the hallway.
Chapter Six
Holly tightened her grip on his hand closer to the living room.
“Easy,” Jonah said. “Dustin, I’d like you to meet Holly and Caylee.”
Holly peeked up at the large man and stepped behind Jonah. She looked at Caylee to see her do the same thing behind Nolan.
Jonah snorted. “He’s not going to hurt you, baby.” He brought her against his side and kept her with an arm around her waist.
Dustin put his hands behind his back and smiled at them. Holly could tell he was trying to calm them down and put them at ease, but it wasn’t easy with as big and fierce-looking as he was.
“Girls, I want to help you. I think between the five of us, we can come up with a solution.”
“You don’t even know what it is,” Holly said.
“It doesn’t matter, sweetheart. I can’t think of anything we can’t do if we put our minds to it.”
Holly laid her head against Jonah’s upper arm. “Okay.”
“Let’s go into the office and get comfortable,” Jonah said.
Holly let him guide her along. She looked around the dark-paneled room before Jonah pulled her onto his lap.
“I…”
“You’re fine,” Jonah said. “Now, sit still.”
Holly stared up at him for a moment and then nodded.
