“What are you thinking about?” Jonah asked her.

She blinked and looked at him. “Just that we might not be here very long.”

He walked to her and placed his hands on her hips. “We’ll see what happens. Right now, we just want to help you and keep you safe.”

She wanted that more than anything and prayed it could actually happen. “What can I do to help?”

“I thought I’d make some scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast. Do you want to start on the toast?”

She nodded. “Sure. I can help with whatever. I enjoy cooking.”

He pressed a kiss to the back of her head, making her stomach tighten. “That’s good to know because I enjoy eating.”

She giggled.

The smell of food woke the other two.

When Holly saw Caylee, she walked to her and pulled her into her arms. “How are you doing?”

Caylee nodded. “I’m okay. How about you?”

“I’m fine. I just feel lost or something,” Holly said.

“I know. I woke up from a nightmare of being lost, and no one could find me.”

“Why didn’t you wake me up?” Holly asked.

“I didn’t want to disturb your sleep, so I just came out here. I wasn’t alone long. Nolan came out, and then we fell asleep again.”

“Did it help having him hold you?”

Caylee glanced at Nolan out of the corner of her eyes.

Holly snorted at the fiery blush that covered her friend’s face. “Come on and sit down. The food is on the table.”

Caylee sighed and sat down next to Nolan.

Holly and Jonah sat down on the other side, and they started filling their plates. She listened to the men talk and took a drink from her glass. She’d eaten half her plate when they were interrupted.

The sound of the ding coming from the elevator startled her. “What’s that?” she asked.

“Someone’s coming up in the elevator.”

She scrambled around the table, grabbed Caylee’s hand, and dashed down the hallway, ignoring the men as they called out for them.

Holly pulled Caylee down to the floor. “Go, get under the bed. I’ll follow.”

Both girls squeezed into a corner, and Holly held Caylee tightly against her chest when she started to cry.

“Girls,” Nolan called out as he walked down the hallway. “There’s nothing to be afraid of. It’s Dustin. He’s a former teammate and good friend. He would never hurt you. We asked him to come because we thought we’d need all the help we could get for your situation.”

Holly looked at Caylee. “What do you think?”

“I’m scared,” she said.

“I am, too, but what choice do we have? How about if we make a plan, gather a few things to take with us, and hide it?”

“That would make me feel better.”
