“You’re a lucky bastard,” Ben said.
Jonah chuckled. “I think so.” When the elevator door closed, he walked into his office, grabbed a glass, poured several ounces of bourbon, and downed it in one shot.
He held his hand out in front of him and couldn’t believe how much he was shaking. He couldn’t ever remember being that scared in his life. Fuck, when he saw her walk around the corner and aim the gun and shoot the man, he was in shock. The sound of her running out of bullets got him moving, and he tackled the guy and got his gun from him.
She’d actually gotten the guy three times, and all in areas of his body that would allow him to live. Although he wished he could kill the guy, the feds wanted to take him in custody and get information from him.
He planned on stripping her and himself and then diving into her body and staying there for hours, at least until they both stopped shaking.
His phone rang as he was walking down the hallway.
“Hey, man. How are you holding up?” Cason asked.
“As good as I can, I guess.”
“It would freak me out, too. Hey, I just wanted to call and tell you I’ve got a condo ready for you two about four floors up. You can use that until we get yours clean.”
Besides his little scaring him, he’d been told about Caylee, which added to the stress. As far as he’d been told, she was admitted to the hospital, and Nolan was with her. One of the guys had told him what happened, but he hadn’t had a chance to call his friend.
“Hey, thank you. Have you heard of anything from Nolan?”
“Not yet. I hope Caylee wasn’t hurt too bad,” Cason said. “From what I saw, there was a lot of blood.”
“I didn’t see her. I wish we knew how bad it was.”
“I know. It looks like she’ll survive, but we’ll just have to wait for more details. A few of the guys are at the hospital with Nolan, and they’ll contact us if they know anything.”
“God, I just pray she survives for both Holly’s sake and Nolan’s.” Jesus, he didn’t know if his friend would survive losing his little. Jonah knew he wouldn’t be able to deal with it.
“I’ll text you with an update. You’re probably going to be wrapped around your girl, so I don’t want to disturb you.”
“That’s what I was planning.”
“If it’s an emergency, I’ll call.”
“Thank you, man.” Jonah leaned against the wall outside the bedroom and took several deep breaths to calm his nerves.
Then he took out his phone and checked for a text from Nolan one more time before he went to Holly.
He needed to deal with his little one at that moment because he’d come close to losing her, and it made him crazy just thinking about how close she was to dying. It was something he knew he wouldn’t get over for a long, long time.
Jonah pulled off more of his clothing before he slid into bed beside her. He wrapped his body around her and kissed her neck.
“God, I never want to go through that kind of fear again,” he whispered.
“Daddy?”
“Yeah, baby.”
“Is everyone gone?”
“Yes. It’s just the two of us.”
“Can I have Caylee over later? She’s going to want to know about everything, and I know she’ll worry about me until she sees me.”
Dammit. He didn’t want to add to her stress, so he decided to wait to tell her about Caylee until he got more information.
“We’ll get in touch with them. In the meantime, I need to be as deep as I can go in my little.”
She curled her arms around his neck. “I need that too, Daddy.”
“I love you, baby.”
“I love you, too.”
This was where he was happiest. Alone with Holly and making love, and he would do everything in his power to ensure it stayed like that.
The End
