Nolan sat back and scowled. “Why do you think that?”
“They were whispering when I walked into the living room, and when I said something, they both screamed and jumped. But the fact that they both looked sad before they could hide their feelings makes me suspicious.”
“Fuck. What could it be?”
Jonah shrugged. “I think we should turn the cameras on in both of our places.”
“I agree. I’ll have mine on tonight,” Nolan said.
A few hours later, Jonah said goodbye to everyone before he locked his door.
“Why don’t you get ready to go to sleep?”
Holly nodded, turned, and walked off.
With every minute that passed, Jonah knew the girls were up to something, and he knew in his gut he wouldn’t like it.
That night in bed, she was especially needy and couldn’t get enough of him. He didn’t mind because he was the same way with her, but he didn’t ever think she would be the instigator of sex.
He and Nolan decided to leave them alone together the next day to give them a chance to see what they were up to.
They didn’t have to wait long. By the time they turned on the cameras in Nolan’s condo to see what the girls were up to, the girls were on the phone in his office.
“Turn up the volume so we can hear them better,” Jonah said.
Both girls sat together in his chair, reminding him of how tiny and defenseless they were.
“Who are you going to call?” Caylee asked.
“I’m going to try my mom’s old friend. I’m hoping they still keep in touch,” Holly said.
“That would suck having your mom ignore you but keep in touch with a friend.”
Holly shrugged. “It’s just the way life is.” Holly held up a finger. “Is this Mrs. Bennet?”
Jonah listened to her side of the conversation and wished he could hear both.
“This is Holly, Janice’s daughter.”
She paused. “Yes, that’s right. I’m calling to see if you have my mom’s number. It’s really important that I talk to her, and I can’t find the one she gave me.”
Holly nodded and then wrote something down on a piece of paper. “Thank you so much. Yes, I’ll tell her. Bye.”
Holly hung up and looked at Caylee. “She’s in Venice.”
“I’ve always wanted to visit Venice,” Caylee said, but Jonah could tell she was lying and trying to be cheerful. “Are you sure this is our only option? What if your mom won’t let us come?”
“Caylee, we already talked about this. Neither of us can come up with something else, and we don’t want to put our guys in danger.”
Jonah cursed. “That’s bullshit.”
Nolan sighed. “That’s a little from what I’ve heard. They’re always trying to protect their daddies, so don’t get too upset with her.”
Jonah wiped a hand down his face. “I know. It just scares the shit out of me.”
“We’ll put a stop to it. Do you want to see if she gets in touch with her mother?”
Jonah nodded. “Yeah.”
