The light on my tracker flashed the whole time, and it feels so heavy around my neck. But I have no choice. If I want to stay inside his house, then I have to do what Roman says.
I don’t want to stay inside his house; I want to leave! He told me if I tried to escape, then the thing would send a series of shocks through my body.
Escaping really is impossible now.
If only Roman could understand that I’m just trying to look out for them.
I am dangerous. I did kill that alpha, but it would be even more dangerous for them if they kept me here alive.
I decided to hide Whitney under my bed. I can’t afford to lose her. So far, they haven’t bothered to search my room, and rather foolish of them, really.
It takes me all morning to get the floors polished, but I never bumped into any of the alphas. Maybe they’re avoiding me.
I wouldn’t be surprised.
I should get started on the dusting, but Roman wants me to visit his grandmother by twelve, and it’s already eleven-thirty. The last thing I want to do is piss him off. He put a tracker around me after all; I wonder if he is tracking me now.
Quickly, I put the cleaning supplies back in the closet, then head across the grounds to Roman’s grandmother. Her cottage is just at the edge of the woods, and how quaint. It truly is an adorable setup.
I arrive at the cottage where I’m greeted by a fluffy white cat. It chirps, narrowing its blue eyes, and I smile.
He’s certainly brightened up my dull morning.
“Why, hello there.”
It mews this time and how cute. I always loved cats.
There comes a shuffling beyond the door as someone opens it from the other side, and soon I’m gazing into the old eyes of the sweetest old lady I have ever seen.
She fixes her glasses and stares at me for a few moments, then a warm smile spreads across her face. “My… you’re a pretty one. Such beautiful, round eyes. I had a doll that looked just like you as a child.”
My heart warms at her kind words. Nobody has called me beautiful for a long time.
I smile at the ground. “G-good afternoon, ma’am. I’m Dove, and I am here to assist you today.”
Roman said she just needs help with the cleaning and the dusting. But he has also asked me to spend time with her too and talk to her.
Not that I mind. I’d be glad to be her friend.
She waves her hand, dragging me inside. “Please, call me Rose. Now, come on. I will put the kettle on. You like tea, right?”
I do. I used to have tea with my own grandmother.
It’s still hard to believe she’s gone, and Rose has only just reminded me of what I lost.
I will never see my grandparents ever again.
The tears threaten to escape, but then Rose distracts me as she pulls me into her warm cottage, and at once the painful memories evaporate while she showers me with kindness.
I think I found my new favorite person at Pack Cobra.
