Dreadlocks’ voice echoes through the woods, and if she’s not careful, she’s going to attract wolves. Hold that thought. We’re the wolves here...
All is silent after the human’s spiel. Her whole body is shaking. She bends her head, tears dropping down her cheeks, and I finally get it.
She’s bitter. Humans have suffered greatly since we wolves came along and took everything. They live on the borders of our society because they fear us. They no longer have access to the things they previously used to, like movies and children’s literature.
Can she even read or write? I’m too afraid to ask.
A sour mood settles over our campsite, and not even Chelsea seems to have it in her heart to attack the human now.
She just bared her soul to us. The least we could do is allow her to have her cry. Sometimes it’s better to just get it all out.
Dreadlocks isn’t as harsh as she makes herself out to be. The woman Patrick fought back at our pack lands had been the same way too, from what he described to me. All violent terror until she shed her skin, revealing her true self.
I rise from my rock as I leave the others around the fire. I stop before Dreadlocks now, extending my hand to her.
“Please... tell me your name. I would love to know...”
Dreadlocks gulps, trying to get her thoughts together. When she finally looks up, all I see is a heartbroken child. Her big, shiny brown eyes say it all.
“Brianna...”
I smile. “Hi Brianna, I’m Ylfa. Behind me is Chelsea, who you already know, Annabel, and Tiffany. And those two handsome chaps are Patrick and Hunter. They’re here to help me find Raven. You see, our goddess told me I had to befriend her in order to stop a war between our species, and I think I managed to get through to her. But after I helped her escape, your people attacked, and then I lost sight of her. So, it’s imperative that we are reunited as soon as possible. That way, no more people have to die. Wolf or human...”
Brianna falls silent after my little speech. Theresa and Andrew watch me frozen.
She sighs. “Fine. But I’ll only take you to our rendezvous site. There you will see Raven.”
She refuses to take me to the actual location of her people. I bet they have been living in hiding for decades, right under our noses.
Besides, she knows it herself. We all do. We’ll be walking into a death tap, which is why Brianna is so willing to help us. But it’s a start. However, it’s still a little too early to untie them. Nothing stopping them from killing us in the night.
I rise back to my feet and join my fellow shifters by the fire, and I guess we’re going to their rendezvous site.
Let the fun times begin.
