I hear these birds were once scavengers, always breaking into human trash or stealing food from right under a human’s nose.

It’s a good thing I don’t have any fries on me...

Brianna stops before the water, and I take tentative steps toward her. When I reach her side, we both breathe the fresh sea air.

It’s in that moment while we’re both gazing at the sea that I think we can do it. We can get along for the sake of our species.

We can share the beauty of this world together...

I take off my boots so the water washes over my feet. The moment it touches my toes, I yelp, jumping back. “Holy shit! That’s cold!”

Brianna snorts, and I look up at her, surprised. “What did you expect, Wolf Girl? It’s freezing saltwater.”

She’s still giggling when I reach my toe down again, pulling it back when the chill seeps into my bones.

So frigging cold.

“I always thought seawater would be warmer...”

She smirks, crossing her arms. “I bet you thought it would be a clear aqua blue, too?”

I did. I hang my head in shame, and she chuckles once again, giving my shoulder a friendly nudge.

I’m not sure what is going on between us. We seem to be building some friendly comradery, but we’re enemies.

We should be at each other’s throats.

“What are they?” Patrick points to a neighboring cove, and there I spy a bunch of furry lumps lounging on the rocks. They’re moving.

Brianna replies. “Harbor seals. Make good meat.”

I concentrate on the seals, noting the way they get around. They’re bouncing. What the heck. I’ve never seen a more ridiculous creature.

Just before I laugh at the absurd, doglike animals, there comes a shout, and I jerk around.

The small beach has suddenly grown more crowded.

Humans wield silver blades, pointing them at shifters, and my heart jumps to my throat. Shit. Where did they even come from?

It appears it was a trap all along. I should have used more foresight. Of course the humans would betray us.
