“Damn. I scared her away. I suppose it was expected. She is feral. It’s been a hundred years since humans were here...”

“Well, not if you don’t count the humans that shift into wolves...” I say. “Something’s off. We should have at least run into a shifter by now. All we’ve found so far are animals.”

Patrick doesn’t hear me as his eyes drift toward an old building. It has large steps leading up to an empty doorway. There’s faded writing on the front, and there’s no mistaking the L in ‘library’.

His eyes swell twice their size, and before I can stop him, he’s making a beeline for that old building with all the books.

Hunter comes to my side, placing a hand on my shoulder. “Let him be, petal. This place is like a playground for him. All this human junk just lying around...”

I blow a sigh. “Still, we can’t split up. We better go after him.”

I peer back at the group. Once again, the humans and the wolves stand several feet apart. “We’re going into that library. You never know... maybe we may find something useful in there...”

Brianna rolls her eyes. “Yeah, if you can read... I was never taught.”

My stomach knots when I hear her small confession. I figured as much when she got all touchy about not knowing who Raggedy Anne was.

The dread-locked woman throws a pointed look my way. “Don’t feel sorry for me, wolf girl. Just follow your boyfriend.”

I glance at Chelsea and Annabel, who don’t look the slightest bit interested in going into that library. Tiffany gives me the cold shoulder, staring at something inside an alleyway instead.

So I guess they’ll be staying out here then. That’s all right. Someone needs to monitor our human hostages. We don’t want them bailing on us now.

I suppose it’s like a punch to the gut for Brianna and her comrades, showing them remnants of a much fancier, less dangerous time in their history. Brianna can’t even read, yet I bottle the guilt away, following my mates into the old building.

Well, I may as well find something new to read. I never got around to reading the last book in that Young Adult Dystopian series: the raiders only brought the first and second books of the trilogy back to the pack.

Did the main character live after all?

I’m about to find out.
