The human sneers. “Fuck you, mutt...”

Mutt?

That does it.

Just as I’m about to slip my arm through the bars, there comes a cry from the front of our convoy, and I stop to investigate.

We’re only several days away from the fortress, yet we’ve stopped.

What is the meaning of this?

I push my way to the front of the convoy, pausing at the sight of two pups.

No, not pups. Children.

Humanchildren...

Several wolves form a semi-circle around them, their teeth bared as they corner them at the base of a tree.

There’s a boy and a girl, and a part of me hesitates.

They shouldn’t be out in the woods alone. Not withwolveslurking in every bush. It just shows that the humans are getting bolder if they’re even letting theirchildrenroam so freely now.

We’re the beasts they used to tell their children stories about just to make them behave.

I’m the Big Bad Wolf who’d gladly eat their grandma...

Since the alpha is busy in a strategy meeting in his own personal carriage, it’s up to me to deal with these maggots.

I approach them in human form, and the kids relax slightly when they see me. They probably don’t realize that I’m as much as a monster as the wolves around them. The older child, the boy, seems a little wiser to that fact, but the smaller, female child looks as if I’m here to save her.

I’m not.

I yank the male child up to his feet, looming over him now. “You dare block our path? This is wolf country,human...”

We’re no longer in our own territory. These roads are deemed free land for all wolves since they connect our packs, but that doesn’t mean the humans are free to go wherever they please.

The little shits.

I bet this is all just some ploy to distract us. Use their most innocent so we’re less likely to attack.

Do they not know wolves? We’re almost as brutal as they are.

They wouldn’t hesitate to kill our pups any more than we’d hesitate to hurt theirs.

The little girl cries. “Brother!”

I don’t touch her, which is surprising, coming from a brute like me. But she looks as delicate as a china doll,

I’m not exactly soft, but I’m not about to pick a fight with a little girl either, especially one who has yet to shed her puppy teeth.

Babyteeth. Not puppy. I really need to stopwolvenizingthese humans. For one, her teeth aren’t as sharp and needle-like as a wolf pup’s. They look pretty blunt.

The boy whimpers, his whole body shaking as he stares up at me with pleading eyes. “Please... let my sister go. Do whatever you want with me, just let Rosie go...”

Rosie?

The same name as my late aunt.
