“Have you tried talking to her yet?” Patrick asks.

I huff out a sigh. “I never get the chance. Brent’s always close by. Plus, the alpha has enforcers watching her twenty-four seven. There’s no way he would let me get anywhere near her. I bet he knew about my side of the prophecy all along. The one whereI’dbe the one to stop her from killing us...”

Patrick falls eerily silent as the wheels of his mind start turning, and would you look at that; he’s calculating...

“That may be the case, but... wouldn’t that work in your favor too, Ylfa? Use it to your advantage. Seek a meeting with the elders. Ask that you be left alone with the human to gauge information from her. It’s a survival tactic.”

Only the sound of screeching wheels fills the void as I stare at Patrick, amazed. What the hell would I do without him?

By using my own status as the chosen one to our advantage, it’d help me attain my goal— peace amongst wolvesandhumans...

It’s worth a shot.

2. Ylfa

We set up camp by nightfall. Patrick assembles our tent, and the former even has schematics in place. It’s a windy night after all, and we need to ensure we don’t blow away in the storm.

“Make sure the poles are nice and steady, Ylfa. The last thing we want to do is end up inOz.”

I laugh at the joke.Ozis the name of a fictional land in a book called The Wizard of Oz, of course.

No one else in the pack would get the remark. Only the alpha and the elders seem to keep old tomes and books.

Paddy is right. There have been other intelligent, book-reading shifters in the past. Many of them elders, yet still. We have our own scholars too, such as the Great Elder Ruben.

He’s famous amongst wolf kind, and was even alive when humans still lived in cities and drove cars.

He has many interesting tales to tell. My favorite is the book he wrote about the time he worked at a supermarket chain near the religious holiday known as ‘Christmas’.

Humans, apparently, were awful to each other, especially to those who worked in customer service.

A bygone era indeed. Now humans have far more things to worry about than their favorite brand of cereal being out of stock.

I wonder what cereal even tasted like.

I steal a glance around the camp. Surprise, surprise, Natasha has the biggest tent of all the females. Her minions, Chelsea and Annabel, have their tents set up beside hers.
