“The filing against the will…” I began as thoughts came to life. “It was after they knew I was with you.”
Van nodded. “Perhaps a change in plans.”
I shook my head. “I don’t believe my mom would risk it all.”
“I’m trying to figure out the end goal.”
“It’s always been for Wade to continue and to succeed as its own entity.”
Van nodded toward my glass. “Drink up. I have another option.”
I brought the rim to my lips, tasting the full-bodied wine with hints of black cherry, spice, and vanilla. “Give me your second option.”
“The damage was deemed irreparable. Your parents and the Butlers were waiting to jump ship once they were no longer at the helm.”
“In that theory, Skylar was as blind as me.”
“I don’t give him a lot of credit for his intelligence.”
Despite the gravity of our conversation, I grinned.
“I will say he sounded the sincerest at your parents’ home with Beth.”
“I agree.” My smile soon faded. “I have to talk to Mom. I’ve spoken with Dad, and he talks in circles. I’ve attributed it to the fact he hasn’t yet come to terms with me wanting a more encompassing role or maybe it’s that he hates admitting the mess that I’m inheriting.”
“I would tell you that your best option is to sell, but the interest from GreenSphere has thickened the plot. I’ll support you in a sale and sell my shares too. I’ll also support you if you want to keep fighting. The newest developments make me think there’s more to this mess than meets the eye.”
“Mess?”
Van set his wine glass on the table and stalked toward me on his hands and knees across the couch until we were inches apart. “The most beautiful and intelligent mess I’ve ever had the pleasure to be in.”
